  • Well done all, looks like the weather was kind and those hills look stunning.
I was considering driving up this morning, but life has been full on recently and a restful weekend was much needed.
With that in mind, I decided to drop something heavy on my hand and spent the afternoon in A&E having a broken finger checked on 🙄

    Should have joined you.
    Next time x

  • Thanks again all! Hope everyone made it back okay.
TTM - you were missed but sometimes you just have to rest, and drop some heavy stuff. Seriously though, hope the finger is okay.

That broken road was just the best!!

Here is the only pic I managed to take:

  • Looks like a good one!

  • I imagine Mam Nick on a single speed is a an absolute killer. Glad you had the weather at least.

  • Proper solid day out that was.
Left at 5am and arrived home at 10.30pm.
Trip up to Sheffield was uneventful, however on the way back i was surrounded by A great bunch of full on Southend supporter's, chanting "Come on the seasiders"
    And
"Whos got the longest pier in the world".?
    "Southend"
The ride iteslf was amazing thanks @youramericanlover for organising this.

  • Some wonderful pictures of the Mam Nic climb and the broken road, all just a few minutes from my house!
Glad the weather was on your side today and well done all involved.

  • Well that got a little out of hand. I hold my hands up and say that route was ridiculous, a game of pure bike wrestling, but in my defence it was public so you all had a chance to tell me to fuck off and change it! But yeah more than 8k of climbing in 70 miles fixed is OTT, sorry about that (kinda, but not really).

Anyway, it was an awesome day. Weather forecast changed daily but we ended up with cold, bright sunshine and a tailwind up (just about) every big climb. Huge respect to the five others who winched their way around. Thanks to @cagimaha for backstopping, hugely appreciated (and under-appreciated). The first 8 miles had more than a 1k ft of climbing which I think was a bit of a shock to everyone's system, but alas it did set the tone for the day. But other than some possibly mutinous under the breath cursing at different points during the day it seems you all thought it was worth the hard work. I did. The vistas did not disappoint, the sun glittered off Ladybower Reservoir, and we had a fortitous regrouping above Bamford and clear views at the top of Mam Nick. Far and away the most miserable climb for me was the last, Ringinglow Road out of Hathersage which had a properly brutal headwind. I think I was at 16 RPM (65 gi!) or some shit 10 mins all the way to the top. But when I managed to lift my head off my bars and look off my left should I saw a burnt umber sunset with five giant bands of sunlight beaming down on the valley, and the moor had a diffused glow for me, @Po and @falconvitesse as we climbed to the top. 'Worth it' doesn't come close to expressing how glad I was to have been there.

@Po was easily the strongest and best rider on the day. But if I'm doing the Hard Day format for merit thing then @falconvitesse gets it. He was in the drops and with incredible souplesse on his vintage bike and was strong on every climb. Absolutely well done.

Anyone wanna help me with next years route?!

  • Never let a grimpeur plot your route

  • For the nerds out there I think I'm gonna get 2.25 AAA audax points for this

  • I'll gladly help out with a route, it'll start around the Macclesfield side of the Peaks though (as that's where I ride and know).
Gimme a shout nearer the time, with a rough outline of what kinda mileage and verticality is required, as an example my rides usually equate to 1000ft up per 10 miles forwards, but that is on a geared bike as my knees can't handle fixed anymore.
Glad you had a good time and the north didn't dump a shit load of wet on you all.

  • How about this? Seems like a pretty chill loop
    https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38739171

Gonna get NFI'd at this rate

  • Elevation: distance ratio looks about right, eminently doable

  • I think it'd be even more climbing than this year! I think Po said add on ~20% to RWGPS, so it could very well be over 9k. It was more a joke really (or something I'd do on my own)

  • Looks good, doesn't use too much of the main A roads, which are fuckin awful (close passes and heavy tarmac).
Takes in Brickworks, which is nice, comes down Thorncliffe, which may be a bit spinny on fixed, but is probably easier than going up it.
Don't know how many stops you take, Flash Bar is the best around, but may be a bit early in that ride, but I work on the principle that it's never too early for a tea break

  • Great thanks, some kind of reasonable adaptation of that route is what we should aim for
