If you have problems finding the correct French BB you could use a threadless BB and bypass the threads , assuming your planning to use a square tapered crankset

I read that the French BB are prone to get loose, I’m worried it would be even worse on a fixed gear because I wanted to ride brakeless.
Do the threadless BBs have the same problem?
I was looking at this crankset https://www.retro-gression.com/products/andel-classic-track-crankset.

The threadless BB are normally used when there’s damaged threads they have British threading so don’t suffer the loosening found on French threaded BB’s ( although I never experienced this loosening)

Could you please recommend a combination of threadless BB and crankset that would give me an ideally straight chainline?

Depending on your frame /crankset you’ll need to find the correct length BB

I should have made a note of the brand,
an forgot.
There is a german company making sealed bearings bottom bracket that Skant mentions using in one of his thread,
they make french and italian BB ,
cheap too. -

Half of Velo Orange cheap.

I could not find Skant's thread mentioned the German bb. Do you have a link please?

Any reason why you can’t keep the existing BB?

I think it is french threaded and it can get loose according to what I read. But I will show it to a mechanic to hear an expert's opinion.

They could do. You could pull the front brake and go over the handle bars, smash all your teeth out. Probably won’t though. I wouldn’t worry about it until it happens, it will be noticeable before anything bad happens. And to be honest, it will probably be really hard to get out anyway as most old bottom brackets usually are. Unless it’s loose I wouldn’t give yourself an extra job to do

You can always use some locktite if it’s that worring

It s Neco, if you need changing it.
Don t worrry about your BB unthreading,
plenty of grease,
and make it tight tight.
Check it after the first rides,
retighten.
If the worst should happen ,
you will feel some play before it comes off.It won't explode suddenly. -

Which model please https://www.necoparts.com/en/category/Bicycle-Bottom-Brackets/A02.html?

The choice of BB will depend on the crankset.
This bottom bracket is likely 40+ years old though, if it hasn’t come undone yet it probably isn’t going to anytime soon. They don’t easily come undone at the best of time. Old bottom brackets are usually a nightmare to get off.
The most problematic part of French bottom brackets used to be that you couldn’t buy new ones to replace broken ones.
If it’s not broken it really would be best and easiest to leave it alone.

Someone selling a Vélo Orange french threaded bb here if it helps: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/373649/#comment16425998
I purchased a PX10 bike and would like to convert it to fixed gear, but I read that these bikes from the 70s use french threading in the BB which makes it difficult to convert. I have very little knowledge of mechanics. Did anyone successfully convert a PX10 to fixed gear? What are the components I need to use?
