I don't think there are any right or wrong decisions at this point, it'sjust a complete clusterfuck!

got my bulb update today
different from velocios by small amounts oddly ?We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 20.763p to 29.632p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 23.296p to 32.141p per day.
We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.186p to 7.517p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day.

Blarg…. On reflection this Russian situation might mean fixing - even at an awful rate - a justifiable thing to do.

The fuck? Why am I getting absolutely shafted on my standing charge?

Standing charge vary by area apparently, determined by the cost to keep the connection running and the maintenance of the infrastructure in the area.

Standing charge vary by area
This was this years but pre price rise

The fuck? Why am I getting absolutely shafted on my standing charge?
i was going to say that my tariff seems quite good but didn't want to appear glib with the way the world is currently !
and as bulb just went bust, had thought i might be moved into relatively unfavourable tariff

Anyone explored something like this?

Few months ago I had the genuine option of tagging on to an un licensed/unknown gas meter with a new system, on the sly, obviously. Felt bad, and decided for being a decent guy.
Now I wish I'd got the whole street onto it while the going was good. Maybe I still will. Profit?
Honestly the actual energy increase costs is one thing, the standing charge hikes are the thing that ticks me over the edge. Its like saying 'the cost of the cable in the ground thats been there for 20 years, now suddenly is twice the price to maintain now'.
Thing is, like car fuels, domestic pricing rises sharply just behind the real wholesale cost increasing (by the % ratio, so that gross profit margins are maintained), but when wholesale cost goes back down, its days/weeks/months/more than months for the domestic price to go back down. Some serious windfall there for some shareholders.

Is the standing charge covered by the cap?
Just wondering if it's being used as a less obvious means to bump prices.
-
• #338
That’s interesting. They’re building a new wind farm in Scotland and recently opened applications for crowdfunding

Yes hadn't seen it before but on face value looks an interesting option, especially as I don't have anywhere to install solar
-
• #340
Yes, it's covered. https://twitter.com/MartinSLewis/status/1489338010986500100
Really annoying that they give you the cap as a fucking useless "typical bill" instead of just telling us the unit rate

Thanks.
Electric standing charge stands out.

Cheapest octopus fixed tariff has gone up by £13p/m in the last 4 days if anyone was thinking of fixing.
-
• #344
I don't think it's the case? £4k estimated annual energy (if I switch) is still £4k. Head firmly in sand.
-
• #345
Sorry, it’s actually increased in the last 9 days, I got my dates mixed up. Was £188 p/m now £201. This was what they offered me as an existing customer, BTW. Maybe should have made that clear.
-
• #346
Yes same here. I'm on the "Flexible Octopus" plan, comes to £170 p/m until the price cap increases. Before that my options are Octopus 12M fixed at £345 p/m or "Loyal Octopus 12M Fixed" at £330 p/m. Head still firmly in sand, don't want to commit. Will probably end up paying more in the end.
-
• #347
Hmmm maybe I should just fix now. Gah.
£279
But only for 12 months. Not really sure how much protection that would offer.
Cap variable is £151
What to do.

Just back from 300 miles of finest Scotland, the more I look for them, the more i notice small scale hydro projects, often on private estates tucked away in a bit of forestry.
Should be buying a house with a stream, build micro hydro, profit?
Just got a bill from commercial landlord, trying to stiff me the going rate TODAY for electric used since this time last year, you know, when it was way less than half. I have access to his utilities account, know for a fact he doesn't pay anything like the price per unit he's saying he does. Normally he's a decent guy but this is leaving a bad taste. Off for some solicitor advise and a letter (the price difference in 1 years of electric at this guys 'mark up' is worth solicitor time believe me. Fucking profiteer's like.

My understanding now is the standing charge increases are in part due to £££ being paid from the SOLR scheme, which the standing charge funds, amongst other things, like suppliers access to the grid.
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/faster-solr-levy-process-consents-last-resort-supply-payments
Basically paying for the failures of bust suppliers.
But only at the start of the observation period, long way to go yet (up or down!)
