What time is it? Watches and horology

Word of warning. They can be quite expensive and if you knock one and the lamp glass cracks or breaks you are fucked and your nice £££ alarm clock becomes electronics recycling because they don't sell replacements.

There are a few Ray Mears citizens floating around here - anyone suggest a nice rubber strap for one? Thanks!

Looks good but I still completely fail to understand the price of the MR-Gs. The module is practically identical right?

The Philps one we have is good, I've been using it for about 5 years now both to wake up and go to sleep. The sleep function slowly dims the light. I also think, unlike some others, they use LEDs so maybe a bit more durable.

I’ve read that too. I guess it all comes down to the materials and finishing which is a pretty tough sell when 3000 euro. Still, I do think it looks great

It’s just…. It’s so far from something like a quartz GS. Like, it doesn’t seem to have either the level of hand construction / hand finishing, or being made of precious metal, that would justify that kind of price. IDGI. Is it just “exclusivity”?

Does anyone know anything about this brand? They seem to make some nice watches.

Yeah, their hand wound chronograph is pretty nice, though they are on the edge of being overdesigned for me. The marketing is typical microbrand, laying it on a bit thick. 100 ideas all at once. And writing “mechanical” on the dial.

Dial could do with less text tho.

A lot of them are hand finished titanium with latest g shock tech. A lot of people were expecting gps , battery indicator or something with this Mr G square so it’s weird it’s essentially the same but 2.5 k more expensive.

Cheap or spendy?
I bought one of the cheap (quick release) tropics on eBay to see how I liked that style of strap on it. I do like it, but havnt got round to replacing with a ‘better’ version yet as it’s been pretty decent so far.

Can anyone recommend me a large wall clock?

Smiths early (1940s) vintage bakelite gets my vote. You can get good original working ones for cheap (~£20) if you enjoy a rummage.

Here’s some marketing tosh I found that might explain their reasoning for the insane price of the MRG square:

Sophisticated polished finish realised with a multi-component structure.

In order to apply sophisticated polished finishes to the tiniest corners of this model's complex form, the bezel design had to have 25 components. The band too has dimpled portions constructed with separate componentry. Sallaz polishing is applied to each part prior to asssembly to give the watch a stunning, distortion-free finish, right down to challenging spots like recessed portions. in each and every component, the artisanal craftwork shines through.

O rly. Sallaz = zaratsu, i.e., how Grand Seiko do their polishing.

Still seems too much money given that the module probably costs a couple of dollars to make, but that's v interesting, thanks.

Seems like an ambitious move into the bit of the market where high price = exclusivity = desirability. Pretty cheeky for Casio.

Well they’ve done that a lot for a long time, using stuff like novel carbon construction and PVD finishes, but it’s been in the $250-$1000 kind of ballpark. 3k plus is Swiss luxury mechanical watch territory. Can understand them going for it because of those delicious profit margins, I just want to see the justification. I’m all for them making interesting higher end stuff. It might be that they already see their future drifting upmarket in the smartwatch era, like Seiko.

They have resigned the whole case/bezel so it’s multi piece but I think the one piece looks cleaner and I would imagine stronger as there’s less bits to fail
