  • No, the lapdog Robert Buckland. To be honest my statement was so broad it could have described most of the frontbenchers.

  • went nuclear they could drop one right on his head in minutes.

This is how the Trident deterrent works.

If the USA or UK is nuked, the standing orders on the submarines are to totally destroy Russia.

Those orders have already been signed and are in the submarines.

The submarines themselves are virtually undetectable and no-one knows where they are, so they can't be pre-emptively destroyed.

So, Putin should know that firing a nuke signs his own death warrant.

But he may be a touch giddy right now.

  • I get the feeling he'd rather go down in a blaze of Russian glory than worry about that.

  • We were discussing this last night as a family, I remarked that I feared Putin had never watched Dr Strangelove.

This Ukraine conflict feels like a prerequisite to something far worse. Saying that doesn’t help those people in Kyiv though.

IIRC he watched it alongside Oliver Stone.

  • Wow! Thanks for that!

  • I too have written to my MP to say impose all sanctions, I'll happily take some pain to see Russia feel the pain.

  • If the USA or UK is nuked, the standing orders on the submarines are to totally destroy Russia.

Um, bit of an overstatement of the British capability?

  • What’s the draw for oligarchs in the Alsace particularly?

  • Email to my MP this morning

    Dear Ms Hayes,
I am following the news of events in the Ukraine with tears in my eyes. With sorrow for the human suffering and for the loss of the values of freedom and independence that define our civilisation.
I am writing as a constituent of yours to urge you to support in Parliament the strongest measures of support our country can give the Ukrainians.
    Military assistance;
    Humanitarian assistance; and
The economic and political ostracisation of Russia.
If our economy is adversely affected by such steps as we may take now against Russia, it is as nothing compared to the sacrifices of others.
We must stand united against this evil and play our part in defeating it.
    Yours Faithfully,

  • Close to their ski lodges and Swiss accounts.

  • Slightly confused by all this Putin is a wreckless nuke head rhetoric.

Putin and NATO both know they can’t and won’t engage in armed combat against each other because the risk to nuclear escalation is too high. Putin knows this, that’s why he can invade Ukraine with impunity (from a military perspective), although maintaining a presence in Ukraine will be more challenging.

He might have underestimated the economic and cultural sanctions (although I don’t actually think he has), but he’s not leading us to a path to WW3.

As a side note this is also why Ukraine joining nato was never going to happen, because it would increase the risk that NATO would be forced to engage in this kind of situation.

Unfortunately for the people of Ukraine these kind of calculations are what matter for the west, not their sovereignty

  • That's the rational analysis - but the fears are that Putin is not rational - his speeches suggests he is not just preoccupied with a NATO threat on his doorstep. Those in the Baltic states do not underestimate the existential threat they are under from him.

  • what does “the strongest measures of support our country can give the Ukrainians - Military assistance” mean?

  • Fuck any military assistance for Ukraine.

  • similarly what does “military response” mean here?

  • care to elaborate on that?

  • Writing to MPs: Don't know if it's too late to stop it, but adding something about stopping the Borders Bill and providing assurance to Ukrainians selling refuge in the UK.

  • This misses the part where Russia detects the launches and returns fire, wiping us (and at this point probably humanity) out in turn.

I don’t think the UK/USA would risk this for a 3rd party so I doubt nukes are off the table for putin.

  • +1 to all comments in this thread that suggest Putin might have a terminal illness. I'd wager it as a 20% chance.

  • people don't realise that a military response would probably mean the end of the world

  • Grim read from their point of view on how they view Foreign Policy and where it should go
    https://www.rt.com/russia/550271-putin-doctrine-foreign-policy/amp/

  • From all reports he seems to of completely isolated himself from the world, even his inner circle for the last two years from fear of Covid, seems to allowed his paranoia eat away at him

  • What’s the draw for oligarchs in the Alsace particularly?

They've landed in Mulhouse which is a stone's throw from Switzerland and probably less likely to attract attention, if it wasn't for people on the internet.
