Slightly confused by all this Putin is a wreckless nuke head rhetoric.
Putin and NATO both know they can’t and won’t engage in armed combat against each other because the risk to nuclear escalation is too high. Putin knows this, that’s why he can invade Ukraine with impunity (from a military perspective), although maintaining a presence in Ukraine will be more challenging.
He might have underestimated the economic and cultural sanctions (although I don’t actually think he has), but he’s not leading us to a path to WW3.
As a side note this is also why Ukraine joining nato was never going to happen, because it would increase the risk that NATO would be forced to engage in this kind of situation.
Unfortunately for the people of Ukraine these kind of calculations are what matter for the west, not their sovereignty
That's the rational analysis - but the fears are that Putin is not rational - his speeches suggests he is not just preoccupied with a NATO threat on his doorstep. Those in the Baltic states do not underestimate the existential threat they are under from him.
