If the USA or UK is nuked, the standing orders on the submarines are to totally destroy Russia.
Those orders have already been signed and are in the submarines.
The submarines themselves are virtually undetectable and no-one knows where they are, so they can't be pre-emptively destroyed.
So, Putin should know that firing a nuke signs his own death warrant.
But he may be a touch giddy right now.

We were discussing this last night as a family, I remarked that I feared Putin had never watched Dr Strangelove.
This Ukraine conflict feels like a prerequisite to something far worse. Saying that doesn’t help those people in Kyiv though.

This misses the part where Russia detects the launches and returns fire, wiping us (and at this point probably humanity) out in turn.
I don’t think the UK/USA would risk this for a 3rd party so I doubt nukes are off the table for putin.
