  • But they wouldn’t be ‘out already’ - AIUI the ‘continuous at-sea deterrent’ means that only one sub is on patrol at a time. The second is preparing to take over the next patrol, the third may be in deep maintenance, and the fourth is in routine maintenance following a completed patrol.

    Occasionally you hear reference to the idea that they could fire their missiles ‘from the quayside’ at Faslane, but I’ve never heard of multiple boats being out at once operationally (except to change place on patrol).

    More than happy to read any contrary evidence, this is a subject I’m interested in.
