  • I’m from Kyiv and most of my family are there. Proper bricking it rn.

Is there an end-game scenario that isn’t bleak as fuck that I can cling on to?

  • Not really any need to post that clip, it's a cycling forum for christ sake, not a shock gore one. @atz Was that the heli clip you are talking about?

  • No, I can't find it now but it was armour crossing the border and translated commentary reckoned they could clearly see Belorussian army markings on the vehicles.

  • I have a friend and former colleague who is Ukrainian and lives in Madrid but her two young children are in Kiev with their Dad at the moment. Heartbreaking.

My totally amature view is that Putin wants to stop Ukrain's build up of forces and so far it looks like they've been targeting military sites. So there's a chance he wants to roll in, destroy any form of resistance, force a treatee that stops Uk building up any future army then leave.

  • I've not been able to do anything but read the news and talk to my wife and family/friends living in Poland. There is already chatter there about making preparations for what they feel is going to be the inevitable if the Russians are not stopped in Ukraine. I've had a constant pain in the pit of my stomach for most of the week.

By coincidence I've just been on an "emergency call" with a US based fintech customer who has asked their exec team and key suppliers to come up for a conteingency plan for if the hot war spreads. They mentioned the public sentiment in Poland specifically. They have a lot of customers there.

I'm somewhat sceptical that its a real risk but even if its just a fear that comes to nothing, its fucking horrendous.

  • Norwich seems ok, so swings and roundabouts.

  • Not sure theres a real risk of Putin trying to take Poland next. Not saying it's impossible but its one thing trying to "reclaim former Russian territory" and a totally different thing invading a country that is both part of NATO and the EU with very strong ties to the US.

  • Looks like Poland is making good preparations for a mass influx of refugee's, I didn't realise they already have a huge amount of displaced Ukrainians (circa 2m) from 2014. I won't hold my breath for the UK offering to take any meaningful number.

  • A lot of speculation was he would stop at the Dneiper and not get bogged down in Western Ukraine but who knows

Totally agree. If they invaded a NATO country, its WW3. Can't see this going that far. That said, there's a lot of people in Poland feeling the threat.

  • Milton Keynes just on the edge of the round a bit

  • There was speculation that Dneiper and the canal feeding Crimea could be a reason for an incursion into Ukraine. (Crimea has virtually no fresh water https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-03-19/russia-vs-ukraine-crimea-s-water-crisis-is-an-impossible-problem-for-putin)

  • The lady who does our cleaning is from Ukraine. She rang my wife to say she'd gone back a few days ago to see her adult daughter. Wishing them both well.

  • Never forget the Russia Today sent out chocolate models of Salisbury Cathedral as Xmas gifts after the Skirpal poisonings.

I'll admit to being a WW1 and 2 history nerd, can't get enough of documentaries about it all. I've always wondered what those early days of Germany invading Belgium/Poland would feel like today and I can't quite get my head around if this is similar or not, but today is a horrible feeling nonetheless

  • I think this is more of a Czechoslovakia situation - attacking a Nato country would be the equivalent of invading Poland

  • My entire family is/was from the Czech Republic or what was formerly known as Czechoslovakia. Under Russian/communist rule they lost everything they ever owned, were thrown into concentration camps and blacklisted from education and jobs. This was of course not just limited to them but anyone who stood against or opposed the communist agenda. I think the whole of Eastern Europe currently looks on with worry of those dark days coming back again.

  • my ex-wife is Lithuanian - 10 years ago her family were telling me they feared russian tanks rolling across the border. i thought it was an historical hang-up...seems more warranted now.

  • Got to love The Mirror..... News, Football, Celebs, impact of nuclear bomb
