FWIW half of my wife's family live in Kyiv.
Conveniently (for peace of mind), they're visiting us and other family this week/weekend.
What they potentially return to is a frightening thought. -

Sounds like they made the right choice.
Horrifying to see what is going on/about to go on in your home city, but less so than being there right now. -

Isn't there already a thread for this?

So now Russia borders Poland, Romania, Slovakia, & Hungary.

Terrifying. They must be worried sick.
All commercial flights have now been suspended in Ukraine - I guess they'll be staying for a while?

Flights looking sparse

The Russians are moving in strength with armor into Kherson Oblast.

This book has an excellent chapter on the build up to this situation.

Russia must be fully cut off from the west and join North Korea club. Full on embargo. No visas, no commercial flights, no connections to any finances in the civilised world. When oligarchs realise they can no longer go to Nice or Monaco or Amalfi coast or whatever, they'll deal with Putin themselves.
All these talks from the west reminds me of a school teacher who's just "concerned" about the bully, and the bully smiles at you because you're the next in line to get your ass kicked.

@ Soul/ Acliff
Yes very lucky- tied into half-term as kids are UK educated.
I think they've planned for a longer stay now, will see how things are when we see them. I suspect currently their thoughts are, rightfully, elsewhere. -

It is an inconvenience but they will just go to Macau, Dubai and anywhere else East. Russia isn't like North Korea, it has a huge amount of natural resources and has a natural resource hungry neighbour, he has made the calculation he can pivot East to survive. Which kind of flies in the face of his rhetoric that losing Ukraine is what made Russia lose it's place in Europe and why he wants it back.
An example being he has probably lost Nordstream 2 but will offset some of that loss with the proposed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline. That pipeline would allow them to redirect their western oil fields that feed Europe to China. -

Agreed. That’s the way to do it. The world needs to turn its back on Russia

Cyber attacks on UK are likely, & a wave of disinformation & trolls paid to agitate.

On another site I frequent, a regular Ukrainian user (45yo) has posted that she expects to be conscripted in the very near future, and if we don't hear from her again, to assume she's dead. Properly sobering.

Nearly all the problems and conflicts in this world today and throughout history are due to the egos of men and the wish to be dominant, control others and extend / protect territories and possessions.
I think the world would be a lot better off if women were "in charge".

I think they already called up the first round of conscripts yesterday as part of the declaration of state of emergency. Today their Defence Minister appears to of issued a general call to arms and said any civilian who comes forward will be provided with weapons and ammunition.
I find the thought of ever being in that situation nauseating, can't imagine how terrifying it must be.
