Just found this - commenting with the vague ambition of joining as I'm sheffield based

Sounds good, come along if you fancy!
Oh yeah and I've changed the route so we're no longer going up Bamford Clough - I did an 18% the other day and realised how stupid 33% be BUT let's definitely shout out when we're near in case any hill climb champs want to give it a go

Thanks for the heads up on this @youramericanlover
I’ve put this in the diary, but won’t know if I can ride until nearer the time. I know you mentioned train space could be an issue, so will drive if I can make it.

Ive just bought my ticket for this. Looking forward to it.
Train out at 6.30am from St. P. Should arrive at 8.44am -

Well done @falconvitesse - was it you who booked the 6:30 and 18:37 bike slots?
Anyway I've booked the bikes spaces for the trains that get London people in Sheffield before 10. Put your name in a spot(s) and I'll PM you your reservations. Advanced tickets are now out so it's prob the best time to grab a cheap(er) ticket.

I'm going to try get my money's worth so am on the 6am out and 20:01 back. Get a bit of city centre tourism in.

• #58
@youramericanlover, yes im booked for 6.30am and 18.37pm.
I booked through the LNER website, however i had to secure my bike slot through ENR. What a faff that was.! -

Are you guys paying like £70 for train tickets? I'm trying to make this work but not sure I can justify the cost with a train into Londres from The Shire too... Fixie no mates over here.

• #60
Sheesh, bike booking system. How come it takes 20min to book a spot and generate a ref no??
@jaeyukdapbap Nuts isn't it. Maybe you can get a lift with TTM from London if he ends up driving? -
• #61
I had the same conversation with myself when considering travelling down to thundercross. It's obscene.

Really happy to offer a place in the car. The only thing is it will be a last minute decision for me, so don’t want to ruin someone’s plans if it turns out I can’t make it.

I rode the hard day in January 2022 with a 46/17 gearing combo.
Im undecided on gearing for this though, i have an 18t and a 19t rear sprocket, giving either 61.5" or 67.5" respectively.
Ideally i would go somewhere in the middle but i havent got the option of changing by chainring.
Any suggestions -
• #65
I'd say 61" would be too low, 67" is probably fine. Going much lower gets pretty uncomfortable for the descending imo
-
• #67
Yeah 67 is about right, I would be afraid my legs might fly off on the descents. And you'll be grateful on the 10 mile descent back into Sheffield.
We all "happy" with the route? It is VERY hilly it seems
-
• #68
I'm pretty apprehensive really but last year was also incredibly hilly. Enjoying it as an objective to get fit for.

• #69
Looks good to me. Only thing I'd be tempted to change is to take Sheffield Rd/Ringinglow Rd out of Hathersage. It's a steadier climb and I think we'll be glad of it by that point.
Plenty of options for stops in Hathersage, Hope and Castleton.

Yeah good thinking. Done!
-
• #71
Hathersage pool cafe is good bet. Lots of space for bikes, outdoor or indoor seating, good value and massive feeds available.

• #72
Might sit either too early or too late in the ride?
Just realised this is two weeks away and it's giving me the jitters

Heads up for anyone driving from Manchester https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-60498001

After the heavy rain we had here 2.5 years ago (you might recall the dam at Whaley Bridge threatening to burst) there are still roads which haven’t been repaired. Long Hill between Buxton and Whaley for one.
If this is done within three months, I will eat my hat.

Is it closed to cycle traffic as well?
Train spaces aren't available for booking yet so I will check again in Jan
