Had a builder over this morning to look at some other stuff we need done and I mentioned the bathroom plans. Going to get a quote from him for work. Really useful to know what the cost was in another, similar, situation. Thanks again!

Ended up finding a suitable ply door blank in MP Morans and they cut it to size. The builders have whacked it right in today which was something of a surprise but no complaints. It needs a decent amount of finishing/oiling. Assume the process is just going through the grades of sandpaper to achieve the desired finish then applying an appropriate wax oil? I've got Osmo clear matt that I used for my floorboards which is presumably the best bet? Also have danish oil for worktops... any advice gratefully received!

Nice - osmo is my default for finishing - check the tin for prep and recommended sanding - 240 i would think. It will change the colour a little - if you don't want that go osmo 'raw'.

Nice one, thank you! Yeah, I'm REALLY regretting leaving the offcuts at the builders yard, would have been really helpful as testers to see what finish I preferred. TBH the door is so pale it could probably benefit from a bit of osmo yellowing but will see when the units are in and how close the tones are. Thanks re the recco for the raw...

As part of a bathroom refit we are replacing the over bath shower with a walk in shower. The shower will have the same footprint as the bath but the showerhead will be at the opposite end.
We'll replace the showerhead but plan to keep the valve because it's a good quality and expensive one that isn't available any more.
Should we move the valve to the opposite end as well, or keep it where it is and just extend the pipes to the new showerhead?
Advantages of not moving it: less plumbing to change, you can switch the shower on and let it get hot before you get in.
Disadvantages of not moving it: if you want to adjust the temperature once you are in the shower you have to get out from under the water, there will be a slight lag in adjusting due to the longer pipes, the combi boiler is just the other side of the wall from the shower so it takes hardly any time to heat up

As long as it's in the shower cubicle I'd leave it, presuming it's not a ten minute walk to get to it ;)

Madness. No one wants to walk to the other end of a shower to adjust temps.
-
• #2859
But equally - letting it get up to temp without having to do the dance... Once it's up to temp, how often do you really need to adjust it?

I'm disappointed you aren't getting a smart valve that identifies the shower occupant with lidar and then sets their preferred temperature automatically.

Either way maybe take the opportunity to replace the ceramic cartridges, if it has them.

I'd probably get a quote to get it swapped to the same end then balk at that cost.

Every 30 seconds, a little nudge hotter until it hurts.

Would be very accurate (therefore expensive) LiDAR for that use case! ;-)

Did a trial run this morning by making myself walk to the end of the bath every time I adjusted the temperature. Was not conclusive. Also decided I prefer the shower where it is. But keeping it that end means ££££ custom glass panels.
Never yet found a decision I couldn't overthink.

How big is the bath that you actually need to walk to the other end of it ?

• #2868
The real question is how tall am I?
(Not tall enough to stand under a shower at one end of the bath and operate a control at the other without some impromptu yoga)

For what it is worth (not a lot) when I had a walk in shower installed a while ago, I had the shower controls at the other end of the shower to where the shower head was. That was so I could turn the shower on without getting my hands and arm covered in cold water when I started it up before getting in.

Was it a good decision or do you curse your past self?

It was a fabulous decision.

Was not happy with the choices of white plastic ducting so end up ordering a brunch of industrial one, quite happy with it (unfinished).

Looks great! Love the knife rack too!

Inspiration needed:
- knife racks
- cutlery tray/drawer organiser things. I had a joseph and joseph one before and definitely don't want another expandable one. Just something that fits plumb in a 45cm drawer without any room to get crumbs down the side. I've seen a nice-ish looking wooden one on ProCook but it's extendable. Howdens have wooden ones but not in 45cm. Other?

Other?
This is an absolute guess, but can you get custom ones made on etsy?
Seems like the sort of thing someone who does that sort of thing could easily do.
It was pre pandemic and I was staying in hotels for work quite a bit
