i've just noticed that they auto-renewed mine at full price without telling me

They did this to me yesterday and I asked them to reimburse and they did so immediately. I never set up a direct debit.

How do you find your subscription status in the app? Eurosport still offers coverage of all the races where I live so I don’t get much from GCN

in android you tap the three lines at the top left then "manage subscriptions".

you can also see it on the website on the "my account" (or something like that) link at the top right once you are signed in.

How did you contact them?

If you go on their website there’s a chat function. Click on that and you can send them a message

So shady not sending a renewal reminder or a receipt for the renewal had to check the credit card app. Checked last year's first subs email and it does say it will auto-renew.
