  • dont do that to the rush hour pro! maybe sort a pair of low profile nuts and then in the future get some allen bolt hubs

  • Rear wheel, rim brake
How low can the NDS spoke tension be ? Is ~55 kgf safe ? Worried about NDS spokes coming loose.
And how can the DS bracing angle be ? Is 2.9° safe ? Worried about brake rub and frame rub given how low the lateral stiffness would be. I got these values with a H+Son SL42 rim, its ERD is 557mm.
Would using a deeper carbon rim (stiffer) help ?

  • Would using a deeper carbon rim (stiffer) help ?

Deeper will obviously help the bracing angle, but not the tension ratio between DS and NDS. Oddly, a stiffer rim tends to make brake rub worse, by transferring more of the displacement at the tyre contact patch to the opposite point on the rim.

  • What about a 2:1 lacing with a 32h hub and 24h deep carbon rim ? The 2:1 lacing would even out the tension distribution between NDS and DS, and the deeper rim would increase the bracing angle

  • What about a 2:1 lacing with a 32h hub

The holes are in the wrong place. 2:1 is a good thing, but only if both rim and hub are made for it.

  • Well I've seen 2:1 builds with a 32h hub and a 24h rim. You only use 8 of the 16 NDS holes, and you use all the DS holes (16). The spoke drillings on the rim have to be centered though

  • I've seen 2:1 builds with a 32h hub and a 24h rim.

We all have, I know perfectly well how to bodge such a thing together. I'm just saying that if you want it to be an actual improvement on using a symmetrical 32H build, you need everything to be designed around 2:1 from the start

  • Sorry I forgot to mention that the symmetrical build I'm talking in my first message would be 28 spokes.

  • The article you linked is very interesting, but I still don't know what setup would be better to minimize brake rub/frame rub.

  • Then you may need to read it

  • I did ... Thanks for your helpful reply

Yep it would definitely help, I'm keeping this as an option, but I'm looking for a wheel with a deeper rim if possible, and I'm struggling to choose between the following options :

    1. alu H+Sons SL42 rim (42mm deep, width : 19.5mm), 28h regular lacing (2cross), tension ratio : 43/100%, bracing angles : 6.8/2.9° here's the simulation
    2. Generic carbon rim (60mm deep, width : 21mm), 2:1 lacing (24h rim & 32h hub, same hub than option 1), tension ratio : 86/100%, bracing angles : 7.5/3.2° here's the simulation
  • stick with 28 h 2x pattern, as said above, a botched rear wheel build is not gonna improve anything. problem is with botched 2:1, the nds radial laced spokes are not at an ideal 90° angle at the flange, so they sometimes tend to unscrew under changing loads (many accelerations and breaking, e.g. you ride a hilly tour). I had a 32h hub radially laced to a 16h front rim and it unwound after about 30-40km of riding, so can't recommend that.

  • I've built a couple front wheels now, but having a go at my first rear and could do with some advice before I order spokes.

Pretty sure my calcs are all correct and I'm coming out with left side 259.76mm and right side 258.17mm - my question is - for the front wheels I built I have just rounded down the spoke measurement, should I still do this in this instance or round up the left and round down the right?

  • rounding down is the way to go.

  • 259.76 is close enough to 260 I'd probably round up, although having the same spokes on both sides would be nice it's reasonably rare on a geared rear.

  • I'd go with 260 for the NDS.

  • Thanks all, spokes ordered.

  • What are these for? One on each arm of the stand

  • Put the axle holes between both, close the stand

  • ah, of course, thanks. for v small wheels i guess

  • This may be a stupid question...but can anyone point me in the direction of some silver rim brake rims available in 18 and 24 hole?

  • may be a stupid question

Not so much stupid as already answered, with the universal answer for this thread. You will probably have to persuade somebody to special order them in that exact configuration, but the colour and drilling are standard option for the Kinlin XR31T
