Dang. That's how I did mine as well. A few times. I wish I hadn't waited so long to get treatment, though, but was thoroughly over rehab and all that after the big accident the year before ... Anyways, I since learnt that longer term inflammation weakens the tissue more. So getting a course of anti inflammatory meds or an injection earlier might have prevented some of the damage I did by landing on it when it was already throbbing every night. For me it's torn three rotator cuffs and a partially ripped bicep tendon plus a labrum tear ...
Of course YMMV

Oh that sounds like a nightmare.
Last year I hurt the same shoulder. I hit a tree going full speed, it stopped me dead. Was painful at the time but had no option other than to keep riding for about another hour or so. As soon as I got into the car and cooled down that pain was unbearable.
Thankfully I don’t think I tore anything last year as I did get it back to full strength with no lingering issues. This time around its no where near as painful as it was last year, it’s feeling better everyday, so I’m hopeful there’s no permanent damage.
The steroid injection is interesting, were you given just one or did you go back for more?
I have Morton’s neuroma in my foot and I’ve been told a cortisone injection will probably be the next avenue I go down before looking at anything more drastic.
You feel it gave you immediate and long lasting relief?
Front wheel washed out hit the ground hard. Just needs a couple weeks rest hopefully..
