Caught for RLJ (Red Light Jumping) in 2022

  • got caught out a few days back...policeman jumped out into the road almost causing a 4 bike pile up.....ha!
anyway, not contesting it, but baffled by the charge letter. Its a standard form catered for driving offences.
options are to attend a driver's re-training course (National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme), pay a fine or wait for court.
despite the officer saying it could be up to a £50 fine, the letter shows £100 - and if paid, to also surrender licence for validation.

maybe being a bit dim, being my first ever RLJ offence.
Anyone else ever receive one, and does it affect your driving licence? and how did you pay?

side note: the officer did specify that the offence would have nothing to do with my driving licence. turns out they register your details with NDORS - which uses your driving license info (ie. LIES!!)

  • yep, £50 if you pay before a month or something I seem to remember?

I filled out the form, without drivers licence details, and paid up online. No dramas

  • I've seen a couple of people pulled over recently....I wonder if they're clamping down

  • They do random exercises now and then. Every six months or so I'd have a chuckle at people being pulled at Shepherds Bush.

I got done in the City once (think it was ~9pm Fri, dead as, but I did it right in front of a cop car and I guess they were bored) and to avoid the fine I had to go sit in a truck to see its blind spots. Bit of a fucking joke, nothing to do with RLJ and if anything just showed that trucks with such huge blind spots shouldn't be driven in cities.

  • attend a driver's re-training course (National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme)

Assume this is at your expense. If it wasn't, that's the one to go for!

  • I had to do one as a teenager... mine was a bit of a bain marie of toxic drivers

To be fair the driving with an instructor really helped my style of driving

  • I had to do a speed awareness course once.
Motorbike, North Wales, what more can I say.
I was surprised at the atmosphere on the course. It wasn't a "you've been naughty, now you've got to learn all the ways your behaviour could kill someone" which is what I expected. More an educational thing like we were all normal people rather than dirty speeders.
Anyway instructor learned I was a cyclist and made me explain Smidsy to the whole class amongst other things which as someone with an irrational anxiety of public/group speaking was enough punishment for me to never want to speed again.

    Still, fucking empty pedestrian crossings.

  • I jumped a red the other day on my ride home. It was at a major junction but I was moving fast and it hadn't long changed. A second or two later a siren sounded and a police car came up behind me. Fortunately they were off to stop some real crime or other and drove past, but for moment I thought I was getting pulled up for it.

  • despite the officer saying

    the officer did specify

It doesn't really matter what the policeman said - they aren't required to actually know the law in that respect, and whatever the actual law is will apply, and the offence code on the letter will be the one that you need to understand.

  • was it you yesterday am jumping a red light on a yellow caad in Vauxhall?

  • No comment officer

  • lol

  • For any riders heading north in to the City on Blackfriars bridge, there's currently an operation to catch cyclists jumping lights on C6 (mainly outside of peak times). Most have been caught by police on bikes wearing high vis...

  • i rlj all day long ... po po jokes etc

  • I do that route home once a week, I absolutely hate the cycle system round there

  • lol...the irony (like some chef's who aren't required to know how to cook, eh?.)..i queried the offence in the end. turns out the 'offense' was incorrectly logged......therefore void...result! ....oh boy, i sure have learnt my lesson here :| i will never rjl again ....ever! &
