    Do like @bq 's suggestion re false backs which would have been an easy option if I didn't need to hide some other tv gizmos in the cupboard

    Yes, there are two options either use the edge banding prep tape or or paint and sand the edges multiple times to try to get rid of the bristle-y fibres that the paint wil raise every time its applied. From my perspective it's a no brainer because it saves me time and therefore make me money.

  • I do it by sanding from 120 - 400 grit with an orbital sander. The surface it leaves is like the normal surface of MDF and takes paint very easily.

    I always knock the edges off too, very sharp mdf edges don't take paint well and chip easily.
