  • Is 200 quid fair to flash an e brompton with latest firmware?
Seems a bit top end to me!

  • Hahahaha a joke? Free unless you didn’t buy the bike from the shop, it’s a 15 minutes job

  • Jesus, who quoted you that?

  • Pure Electric

  • yeah, £200 is insane. they are having a laugh

  • Is that purely for an update or including a whole service too?

  • Full strip down to frame and forks
Frame cleaned and checked for alignment and damage, threads cleaned and checked
Frame and disc mounts faced (if applicable)
Headset removed, cleaned, regreased (if applicable), refitted & checked for movement (replacement fitted if necessary)
Wheel hubs disassembled, cleaned, inspected and reassembled
Bottom bracket removed, cleaned, regreased (if applicable), refitted & checked for movement (replacement fitted if necessary)
E-bikes: Electrical connections checked and cleaned
    E-bikes: Battery checked and charged
E-bikes: Firmware updated and service report produced (where possible)

considering you do not have disc brakes, they are not going to take apart the hub motor, you probably dont need a hinge and sleeve replacement? £200 is top end.

might be better seeing if they offer a lower level service

  • If you're in London then Lunar Cycles is where I would very strongly recommend to go.

  • I have a couple of spare ikea kallax cubes which accommodate a folded brompton nicely, if anybody is interested and willing to pick up from N1.

  • .

    Never mind, course they can.

Anyone done their own pivot pins in the stem and ‘toptube’?

  • Yes but I have the necessary tools and replacement pins.

  • Are you in the uk?

I’m seeing stuff online from people who have been able to buy the tool and pins but think they are all outwith the uk.

  • I am in the UK but the tool and pins came from overseas. Brompton really doesn’t want UK privateers working on Bs.

  • Yeah. It’s annoying. I guess at least the ping thing isn’t a job that needs doing very regularly and I think I can probably do the main hinge myself with no special tools if it comes to it right?

  • Maybe it is easy enough to bodge. It is certainly an easy job to do with the right tools. The wear in the hinges was resolved by going up a pin size, which was nice. I have done hinges on three Bs of mine/ my family so far, so I am running about even on cost doing it at home vs. bike shop. The next B refurb should put me in profit.

  • Maybe it is easy enough to bodge. It is certainly an easy job to do with the right tools.

Are there special tools for the rear triangle hinge? Thought it was just a case of pushing the bushings in and the spindle through then bolting together?

There’s another local place that might be able to do it but it’s been a while since they used the pin tool so weren’t too sure and I forgot to check they can do the seattube insert.

It’s probably going to be easier to just send it to sjs.

Unless I could buy the tool off the other place for a decent price…

  • Replacing the swingarm pivot bushes is fairly easy to bodge. Reaming the new bushes in place takes some care and more care if you are bodging it. If you don’t need to ream the new bushes, great but that isn’t my experience.

  • It’s easiest to post to me, or just we can discuss when I reply to you! ;)

  • All new bushes need reaming, it’s a piece of piss, just need a reamer, my 4 year old can do it if I drill the bolts off for her

  • Something about grandmother and eggs…

Piloted vs. unpiloted reamer makes a difference. I have seen somebody do a shitty job with an unpiloted reamer.

  • Well I got everything back from Ben and just had a go at drifting out the old bushings…no bueno.

Looked up the proper technique and suspect someone’s buffered that up before me as the m10 tap I had wasn’t really biting into the old bushes.

Not sure if an m10.5 or m11 (are these even sizes? Just about to look) would have any better luck.

Anyone know what the bore size is incase I just have to ream the old bushes right out?

  • I use a 13/32” tap if the M10 tap looks marginal. I guess a 7/16” tap might work but I have never tried.

  • I can get an m11 tap. 7/16” is 11.13mm.

I own neither so will need to buy it anyway. My old man might have a 7/16” though.
