'Rather weak' is an understatement. Masi ignored the rules, ignored what he had done in a previous race, and does exactly what he is told by Red Bull.

But all that radio chatter has been available on the official F1 YouTube channel from a video that was uploaded on the 16th of December, 4 days after the race. Why is it being treated as a "leak"? Lazy journalism? Spreading misinformation to get some more clicks?
-
• #8629
Yes, it has been available since December, so not a 'leak'. Maybe not everyone picked up on it at the time, and is newsworthy again with the launch of the new cars.

Spreading misinformation to get some more clicks?
Definitely a big lump of this going on. Yes, not a leak as much as an edited rehash - I was wrong there (hadn't actually heard the 'understood' bit or the two clips put together, using the same language - but the edited video is definitely put together to push some buttons. Journos also reporting it as new footage or whatever is very misleading.

is newsworthy again with the launch of the new cars.
I don't follow this, the main talking point in F1 for the past 3 months is worth revisiting because they've released the 2022 cars? It's not like this wasn't the main thing being discussed continuously during the off-season.
It sounds more like it's newsworthy because it's being reported as a leak. Despite the content of being publicly available, not just live during the event, but included in official 5 min highlight videos of the event?

Gotta get those eyeballz and clickz somehow and journalistic competence / integrity just gets in the way
-
• #8633
Looks like McLaren managed to take the Gulf colours and somehow make them look utterly crap
-
• #8634
Yeah, that’s an ugly car
-
• #8635
I think they all a little odd because rake is (because it buggers ground effect) gone, so the nose is much higher up relative to what we are familiar with.
-
• #8636
I like it

I think the Aston Martin looks awesome to be fair. Will be interesting to see what Ferrari, RB & Merc come out with.
-
• #8638
Interesting. Presumably they're using a torsion bar as an ARB spring. It'll be interesting to see how that linkage deals with heave. I wonder if they're using a lateral shuttle with Belleville washers for heave. Dampers would be tiny though.

Pullrod front / pushrod rear. Interesting.
Regarding the chassis failures, the nose is much, much longer this year. It’s probably been quite challenging making the nose stiff enough and still passing the front impact test. Doesn’t surprise me that there have been failures. The Red Bull chassis was always designed so close to the required failure point that it wasn’t uncommon for a chassis to fail as a result of the crash tubes at Cranfield crumpling out of spec and overloading the chassis by a few kN. Rather than a redesign, we’d run a beefed-up version of the chassis with a cleat around the front.

Ah, not as interesting as I thought. Could see the front pullrod on the RHS of the car in that photo.
-
• #8641
I think it is quite interesting actually. Pretty much the last decade has been all pushrod at the front for aero reasons and the back end has been pull rod with those long pull rods running diagonally down past the gearbox.
-
• #8642
I think the driver for changing to pull rod is to do with 3/4 rule changes, bigger wheels and the rule around having all the mounting points inside the wheel, and there's a rule about the angle the nose in the footwell has to slope, which basically means there is less room for push rod to be practical.
-
• #8643
So far McLaren still the only team with a push-rod rear suspension design. Not really sure what the motivation is there, but I'm not optimistic that it'll do them any favours.
-
• #8644
I read rumours it might be a Mercedes gearbox related thing.
-
• #8645
Williams has been on track. Looks pretty skinny!
-
• #8646
Ugh, can Drive to Survive be released already. I need some entertainment until the new season starts!
-
• #8647
AM & Williams are still going the pull-rod route though right?
-
• #8648
Jesus I can only imagine what Drive to Survive will be like with the 2021 Abu Dhabi race, it'll be like an Eastenders xmas special directed by Michael Bay
-
• #8649
Haha! Oh behave, it's all good fun.
I do wish there was more sober and techy F1 content available on the regular tho. I like nerding out on the cars more than picking sides between gangs of white trousered millionaires.

I am looking forward to the return of tech videos on the F1 YouTube channel with Sam "sticky uppy bits" Collins. There's another YouTube channel called TheRace who seem to do a lot of work with Craig Scarborough and Gary Anderson who have a decent amount of tech chat.
Link?
I've heard a lot of stuff about this new info, but is anything that wasn't available here?

Anything more than the radio that begins at 1:50 or so?
