  • I despise the metaverse

  • Call me a Luddite but I couldn’t give two fucks about the metaverse. Would rather explore the real world more.

  • You Luddite.

  • Is the metaverse something you can virtually visit like that?

I believe you can visit it now? Or some beta version of it. Populated by cartoon avatars and the like.

I didn't think it existed yet & was just a plan for future business to rip money out of people!

I don't think anyone's really crying out for it. Least of all, if anyone does, do they want to have to wear 3d headset things to do it in?

  • Analytics firm looking to land big client in makes the client look amazing shock.

More from our correspondent, @Sam_w at 6.

  • It's a platform, nothing else.

Facebook is looking to create a walled garden that people feel they have to get into - and they'll entice people with all sorts of promises.

Once enought critical mass is achieved, and they have lobbied enough to make it quasi-infrastructural, they'll monetise the fuck out of it.

  • This is still one of my favourite videos, I never understood why the Google glass project didn’t gain more traction in the consumer market

    https://youtu.be/YJg02ivYzSs

  • Is there, like, a URL for the metaverse?

  • Weird, another company the same name as mine!

I spend most of my time telling clients that facebook doesn't work, to the point that they have got annoyed with me and asked for a meeting...

  • If this means that there's less Facebook users walking around in the real world, then I'm all for it

  • If anyone's not read Ready Player One, it's basically the metaverse

  • And for anyone who has read Ready Player One and not read Ready Player Two, lucky you.

  • Haha I haven't bothered with the second one

  • There seems to be a lot of metametrics about.

"MetaMetric Solutions" (their website doesn't work...) claim to be a "provider of Metaverse data and insights".

And they're telling people that the Metaverse is a BigThing™.

    Uh huh.

So they're totally not just a firm spun up to promote Metaverse.

  • I mean, it's a well trodden scifi trope.

    Snow Crash, for example.

Went into a lot of detail about the real estate value of a virtual world.

It even coins the phrase "Metaverse".

  • If Neuromancer is anything to go by being locked out of the Metaverse will be seen as a punishment in a few years.

  • Please sir, I'm ready for my punishment already.

  • hmmm! Going to be even more of them in the next year too.

There are two originals. We were formed in 2010, and their is a US based education company called MetaMetrics Inc. who have also been around ages.

I'm sure we will outlast most of them...

  • A very sensible decision.

Very much reads like a book written because someone wanted to make a film out of it.

  • Don't, in a rare exception the film is actually better. I got the book for free and still regretting spending my time on it.

  • The first book lasted about half a chapter. It's in a very small set of books that I have demanded a refund for.

  • Maybe...maybe we are already in the Metaverse

  • Betcha didn't think about that did ya?

  • I’ll cast my opinion on most things rightly or wrongly.
