  • In planning, trying to work out if I want to DIY with Oakgardenroom build pack or get someone to do it

  • These have either gone for a "distressed" look on the taps, or they have the hardest water known to present day earth-based humanity.

  • Is the radiator above the sink? Or do you have underfloor?

There's a narrow vertical radiator/towel heater between the bath and the door. About 25cm wide and 180 tall. It's too slim for a ladder style so it's got hooks for towels.

  • I'd think having a big hole would cause more splash back than having the screen extend higher than the shower head.

  • "distressed" look on the taps

TBH I think that's a good idea. We're in an unwinnable war with lime scale. Should probably get a cleaner, but a water softener and surfaces, grouting, taps, etc. Which hide limescale sounds like a win to me.

  • But then you couldn't fold it back!

Let's be honest, irl the only time that screen will get folded back is for the Saville's sale photos, and then they'll discover that the hinges have seized.

  • Having a bath with a screen next to you is shit, I assume that's why you would choose to have a folding screen.

  • DIY with Oakgardenroom build pack

That's quite an attractive option to me but you do need to find a friendly electrician

  • I assume if you trench out the cable run and mark up board/socket/light locations properly then most sparks would love it as a quick job.

  • That's what I was thinking as well but mind you I've not watched the whole build. Watching the solo series at the moment I'm on Day 6

  • Perhaps but the devil might be in the detail. Oakwood Garden Rooms run the mains electricity 'outside' between the OSB and cladding rather than inside the OSB where the thermal insulation is. There is some debate as to if that is a good or bad thing to do. You need an electrician that agrees with Oakwood or you start to deviate from the build pack and who knows where you end up...

  • Good point about the external runs and the various attitudes.
I was going by most of my experience of domestic sparks being them not wanting to do anything that involves physical effort so assumed doing that heavy lifting would make it easier.

I'd love to hear some of the "anti" opinions with appropriate references to 7671 to justify. I don't use it much these days but i spent 7 years in a job where I was referring to it every day.

  • No we went with a local kitchen provider in Dublin called Kitchen World. I got a bit of a bargain busters vibe off them at first but Shane, the sales guy we dealt with was absolutely fantastic and the quality is really good! Would happily recommend them!

  • I do wonder how much escapes from the hole tho?

Presume they've got one of these giant corks just out of shot?

  • I'm completely unqualified to have an opinion but I did raise an eyebrow. I recall an episode of Grand Designs where someone was building a straw bale insulated house and ran their electrics in pyro to guard against rodent damage, could that be a risk with cable the way Oakwood do it?

  • No more than under the floorboards in my house. (Electrocuted several times due to munched insulation) I don't see rodents bothering under the cladding when there's the base to live under.

Straw bales would also have the fire risk and issues with de-rating cables encapsulated by insulation.

  • looks good. How long is the run in the alcove? My eyes tell me 2200-2400mm but I'm planning something in a similar shape/size space so this is a good reference!

  • I once found a cable that had been entirely uninsulated (about 100mm of it, outer sleeve and both cores) by a rodent without causing a trip. Little bustard was like a surgeon!

  • 2460mm to be precise!

  • My sparky was more than happy to run cables outside the OSB, as there's >75mm clearance to the outside of the cladding.

    YMMV, of course.

  • @Tenderloin posted a light wood flooring a while back, but can't find it. What was it?

  • Was it his big bucks Dinesen Douglas?

  • Yep!

    Big bucks

I wouldn't expect anything else from a man of such exquisite taste.

  • There are some very good other options for Douglas fir, which aren’t solid wood and which come in a variety of widths and finishes. After @EstelleGetty let me know the likely cost + covid price hikes. I found some alternatives. Can dig them out if you want
