Oh, the problem is not the base plate. Carry on.
In this picture it's definitely not on straight. Try that?

Steerers can vary. I have two steel forks, one of which the CK will slide on, and another which it won’t. This is the ‘new’ CK too - Which still has an O-ring

my workday is over,
it's all going to sbc sometime this week (sbc people if you're on here, it's your problem soon)

I'm thankful for this review..
I want a splash of colour so think I may have to sink into my wallet for a hope.
Non of this ck business.

I bought a Superstar Headset in the summer and it arrived with both bearings rattling loose in the cups and one cup very obviously deformed with part of the cup flared out. I complained and they sent me two new cups which the bearings sat perfectly in. So they can do it. Just need to still work on their QC abit

Vibey.
What is this bike for again?
-
• #1984
Been asking myself the same question lately
-
• #1985
"Dear SBC. Please fix my headset, and also, what is this bike for again?"
-
• #1986
Hmm, the cups look the same as hopes do, so perhaps the hope bearings will fit too?
-
• #1987
Yeah they seem to have pretty much copied the Hope profile. Wonder if its a CNC thing. I was just a bit dismayed at what they sent me first thing, they were that bad. I hope they improve/implement some QC as having another established UK brand would be great. Tbf they have come a long way in the last few years.

A good forum bike build should be like Sisyphus. Endless. Even better if it is never actually used. Its all about the journey (but not by the bike in build obvs).

fwiw i would get hope, installed two and it's just a joy, tolerances are tight but not absurd, rubber seals are bonded, the crown race is split not press fit - just all round designed for the home mechanic while still being reliable
i guess it's the difference between the americans and the british
the americans made the perfect machine, which is an exhaubarent price, filled with their own standards and really requires 5 or 6 people to fit and a bucket load more tools. a job creation scheme if you will.
the british? it keeps out mud and any loser can do it in their shed. it's not very pretty to look at tho

What? I always think hope stuff looks ace. You can see the engineering that has gone into it. I like how they don't hide or polish out the machining marks.

i think they could do some new colours now and then but i do agree the industrial design is attractive and the shape itself is compelling
i'd like some moss green parts, claret, baby blues - even if small run.
something to make my special build to look a little different from the pack, or even to match the current trends in frame and component colours better (muted/ pastels/greys)
im sure the hardy northerners dont much care for this metrosexual wankery tho, they'll say some stuff like "it works" or "who cares how it looks", maybe they feel the lego block colours are a brand signifier and stand out more now as the market moves away
they're free to do what they want
but their seatclamps are still shite.

Yep!

They 100% care about the aesthetic I think. It's this that has kept them at the forefront of desirable components that people want on their bike. I think the colours maybe stem from 2 things?
1 - They are old school so have kept with the anodized colours that have featured for a long time.
2 - They do so many components now that maybe it would be too awkward to do a batch of hubs, cranks, brakes etc as a lot of people like matchey matchey.
I loved the pink stuff they bought out but it was so limited and you just can't find it anywhere for sensible money.
Seat clamps are shite though, as are the Alu bolts in the top caps. -

I do wish my hope headset was round rather than square
-
• #1995
i'd like some moss green parts
Hope will never do green as that's their super special super secret team and staff only colour
-
• #1996
hope, if you're reading this, i can be your customer journey analyst in exchange for a competitive salary and some green hope
-
• #1997
This is why I don't buy hope
-
• #1998
Do they still do any of the green stuff for anyone?
-
• #1999
I've had a few ck headsets and have been fine. I always cut crown races myself before installing. Lil hack saw job and its always an ease to get on and off.
People don't always agree with the method of cutting it yourself but I've found no harm.
I'm gonna take a punt on the superstar tbf as I want purple and not have to pay 80/90 for a hope

why not get a pipe and a mallet?
Has the fork crown race been properly faced and cut? 🙃
