After several years absence I have build a new fixed gear bike, bit more of a focus towards mixed terrain this time.

Some say you shouldn't grease it but in my experience that's bs

• #129454
out of curiosity, do you have any link to that recommendation? (might be useful for me in the future)

Industry standard is minimum 40nm.
Always go about 50nm on a track crank

Yup, I don’t understand the reasons people say NOT to grease it. Makes no sense to me

This looks cool 😎

Standard R531 Butted frame built in 1979 in Ti Livery in Carlton factory Worksop. It is a nice frame indeed, with its cut-out lugs or the semi wrap around seat stay caps. As for the parts, the bike has a very fine equipment. it’s still a quality built frame just not SBDU status
So it's not a SBDU (Raleigh Specialist Bicycle Development Unit) but it's a cool bike : )

thanks!

looks great, Worksop made some really fine bikes.

40-50nm
Isn’t hat equal to torquing with 40-50 kg and a 1 m wrench? To my knowledge you shouldn’t grease the crank bb interface to prevent the crank arm slide too far onto the spindle. Making me think 50 Nm could be too much.
Anyway, a 10 cm Allen key gave me another quarter of rotation on the screw, hope that will help! -

you could argue that grease will help the crank sit on the spindle properly, preventing movement and damage later on. Also prevents corrosion between the aluminium / steel axle.

No, it's more like 4-5kg. The weight of a 1kg mass on earth at sea level is 9.8N, give or take a bit depending on where on earth.

To my knowledge
Your knowledge is wrong. It will take less torque to get the crank in the right position on the taper if all the sliding contacts (taper, thread, under the bolt head) are lubricated.

Cool. Thanks for clearing up!

Banger!

• #129468
I agree, always grease!

IF it's 165mm AND you don't mind it being silver and bit scratched up, I've got one going.

Thanks, it would fit perfectly. I'll just see how far it takes me right now and will come back to you if it gets loose again!

this is nice, i have a ratty pompino setup in a similar way for local errands, also with bontrager satellites but the wheels are 650b. I keep meaning to find another frame as it is a bit small for me.
fake? bontrager cages a nice touch :) -
• #129474
Thanks - they are fake, but they're years old at this point and, i must say, have been flawless. I've never lost a bottle!

First impressions of this are that it's pretty fun. The second hand Deore hydraulics I slapped on need a bit of attention though. Mudguards, flite and better grips coming soon.
The cockpit might need changing as well. I love the @M_V bullmoose bars but the reach might be a bit long.

Right, well that's probably by far not tight enough to start with. Sugino suggest 40-50nm which is a lot tighter than you'll be able to get with a mini tool. Riding it loose may have ruined the taper now though.
