I bought a Superstar Headset in the summer and it arrived with both bearings rattling loose in the cups and one cup very obviously deformed with part of the cup flared out. I complained and they sent me two new cups which the bearings sat perfectly in. So they can do it. Just need to still work on their QC abit

fwiw i would get hope, installed two and it's just a joy, tolerances are tight but not absurd, rubber seals are bonded, the crown race is split not press fit - just all round designed for the home mechanic while still being reliable
i guess it's the difference between the americans and the british
the americans made the perfect machine, which is an exhaubarent price, filled with their own standards and really requires 5 or 6 people to fit and a bucket load more tools. a job creation scheme if you will.
the british? it keeps out mud and any loser can do it in their shed. it's not very pretty to look at tho
My bearings in my EC and ZS cups haven't lasted well at all. They do go through some horrible conditions tough.
Alternatively the Cane Creek headset in my Bird I had before lasted really really well. It was still like new. I should have gone hope straight away. I went brand x full, then got a Nukeproof lower and just did that, then thought I 'upgraded' to superstar but alas here we are. You only have to take a pair of bearings out of a set of hope hubs to find even when they are worn they hold up really well and are great at resisting corrosion.
