5 is a bit shit for cod and God but EOD kind of works for end of day *and* the bomb squad which is nice. You could also have EAVE/CAVE/GAVE which maybe has some kind of Santa link but I couldn't come up with a good clue. For 3 coil and warmth aren't brilliant. Coll is archaic version of embrace. Could have gone with Coll the island but couldn't link that either. ELNOO and DN also are fucked if you want to do the rest of the crossword.

Ha, interesting effort, but a bit strained (as you say). I wouldn't trust myself to take any less than weeks to come up with something. Also, I do think you need to find something where there's a potential three-way split of opinions and where all three options have the same number of letters, and that in itself is already extremely difficult. :)

At any rate, the reason why the original one is good is obviously because it makes fun of the 'controversy'.
