In theory, you could do this sort of trick for n variants, although even three would probably already be extremely hard to achieve.
At any rate, the reason why the original one is good is obviously because it makes fun of the 'controversy'.

5 is a bit shit for cod and God but EOD kind of works for end of day *and* the bomb squad which is nice. You could also have EAVE/CAVE/GAVE which maybe has some kind of Santa link but I couldn't come up with a good clue. For 3 coil and warmth aren't brilliant. Coll is archaic version of embrace. Could have gone with Coll the island but couldn't link that either. ELNOO and DN also are fucked if you want to do the rest of the crossword. - Common cultural reference
