  • I bought the £20 antigen test from c19testing.Co.uk. This was fine. Certificates back in a couple of hours

  • We used lateral flow tests - but they were ~£30 each because they need to be certified.

  • That looks right, but you can't use an NHS one, it has to be from a tory donor ££ provider.

  • Everything the same about the kit compared the the nhs kit except for the little sticker…

I have zero problems with the NHS not paying for people's holiday requirements.

  • Cheers all, sorry for thread derail.

Ridiculously excited to get back to the mountains. Off to morzine for a few days, looks like the first day might just be a pow day

  • No, sorry, realized I posted it as a reply to your post, but didn't know how to undo it..

  • Me neither. My comment was more about the way in which contracts may have been awarded and who appears to benefit (hopefully more info may be made public in the future. . It should be noted that we have had 7 tests per pack for free for ages so must have cost a fortune to get to us.

  • Re the avalanche deaths a few days ago, we're in North Tirol at the moment and have just got back from an epic backcountry tour. We spent about twenty minutes planning our route with the friend we are staying with who is head of the local mountain rescue and also head of training for the Austrian mountain rescue service.

Conditions out there are so tricky and could easily draw you into a sense of false security. You can read the conditions well all day and just wander right into a trap. The problem is wind blown snow sitting on top of frost.

Lots of skiers getting into trouble in this neck of the woods. Another dump coming tonight going to piste ski for a few days I think.

  • This is a massive risk in France too now if there’s a big dump. All the off-piste is now pretty frosted over and there will be no bond between any new snow and what is already there.

  • Second day in Chamonix, two days at the snow dome in Tamworth and now I'm doing greens and blues so happy with my self as I've heard it's not the easiest of resorts for beginners. Did le brevent yesterday and totally ruined my knee. Think it might be a strained ligament but being the fool I am I'm taking it easy and just did a some runs at Les houches. Abit of an essay but having a good time so far 👌🏼

  • I'm in no position to say anything about knees - I skied through mine and am now waiting to get an appointment to find out what I did to it.

  • I maybe inba similar situation.... Touch wood you get the results you want 🤞

  • Get yourself to the other end of the Valley in Le Tour for lots of confidence inspiring cruisy blues...if your knee is ok that is!

  • Why will you guys not go a see doctors while there? From experience of injuring myself while skiing, IMO the doctors had better knowledge of the injuries as the docs see the injuries regularly. You have insurance so costs are covered.

  • Tomorrow s plan, aiguille du midi in the morning then le tour for my sorry self.

  • Have just spent some time reading up on the big avalanche incident in Tyrol last week. Looking at the route, and the conditions on the day, I have no idea why they thought it might be safe. Even more perplexing is that they were with a mountain guide. Maybe I'm missing something, and of course I could be, but the info that is available is not pointing towards unavoidable freak accident.

    Edit: Incident reports here: https://avalanche.report/blog/avalanche-warning-service-tirol.blogspot.com/5629503851449789394

  • Anyone interested in buying some Rossignol Scratch FS skis with Rossignol/Look bindings? White, 174cm. £50 collected E17. PM me for pics.

  • aiguille du midi in the morning

    Presumably just for the view!

  • People get complacent. "Oh I've done this route loads of times, I'm sure it will be OK".

  • A classic heuristic trap

  • I really enjoyed giving cross country skiing a crack in the USA a few years ago, to the point where I'm entertaining a CX ski holiday some time in the coming year. Does anyone have any ideas for non-flying, budget friendly CX ski destinations from London? Norway is obviously the gold standard for locations but it costs a bomb!

When I mean CX skiing I mostly mean non-technical 'trek' style skiing, I'm not an advanced CX skier by any means.

  • Oberhof in Germany. You can ski there whatever the conditions, they've got a 1km loop indoors. Think you'd have to drive though. Le Grand Bornand near Annecy/La Clusaz is pretty stunning too

  • Those reports are sobering. Can't be too cautious I suppose.

  • Most certainly aha, I'm not sending it down and black or off piste runs
