Have just spent some time reading up on the big avalanche incident in Tyrol last week. Looking at the route, and the conditions on the day, I have no idea why they thought it might be safe. Even more perplexing is that they were with a mountain guide. Maybe I'm missing something, and of course I could be, but the info that is available is not pointing towards unavoidable freak accident.
Had a chat with a rescue climber earlier. Apparently the guide had them pretty well spaced out which would have saved the group in most cases. The problem in this instance is that the slide was 400m wide due to the nature of the terrain. Scary stuff.
