  • Or - a bit like with EV grants - have a max price at which the tax break falls off. That way the more rudimentary models which are still very useful to farmers etc still qualify, but the likes of the Ranger Raptor deservedly lose out.

  • Why 40mph? I have to travel to get stuff from 40 odd miles away from specialist retailers, its still a genuine use of it?

  • This is a great idea I think. its a flat rate of tax currently, so just maintain that for vehicles under £xk and then have punitive rates that bring it in line with other vehicles once that is breeched.

  • 40mph was a bit flippant, but some commercial vehicles are limited to 60, so something like that could be possible.

Anything to make them look a bit slow and impotent to someone buying it as a symbol of their power and virility.

  • Or what spj7 said.

  • I would be in favour of a speed limit on all commerical vehicles, so would be on board with a limit of 60mph on all pickups and vans, makes sense to me.

  • Why do they need a tax break anyway? Just do proper emissions/carbon tax regardless of commercial status

If it's a business expense it's gross income anyway so you already get a nice discount if it's for work purposes

  • Valid point, and that would be a wider issue with all commerical vehicles. I suspect it would then lead to a rise of cars\vans being designated as pool vehicles and that loophole being used...

  • The tax break is there because it was lobbied for effectively, not because it makes sense. It doesn't stand up to any logical scrutiny.

Huge cars are popular because people think huge cars are great. As air pollution is invisible and climate change is other people's problem, it's easy to go on buying giant cars.

People buy brands not because of what they do but because of how they have been told it will make them feel.

Now that all that's been sorted does anyone have any Rapha discount codes?

  • we have a small electrical business on our road, which for some reason just have bought 3 of these ford rangers as company cars. can see why now if theres a tax break. there is one currently double parked blocking in 3 cars.

  • One thing that could be done would be take them back to being more basic vehicles, take away a lot of bells and whistles and they would be less appealing to families, but no idea how that could be made to happen.

  • not because of what they do but because of how they have been told it will make them feel.

Isn't this your case for rim brakes

  • Just do proper emissions/carbon tax regardless of commercial status

road charging as well, the only way.

  • I would say that the tax is identical between a van and a pick up, so its not a pick up specific tax break.
A lot of traders are getting them because they can use them during the week for work, then at the weekend for a family car, so means they don't have to run another car.
Also currently it is almost impossible to get a new van as well.

  • This is my old pick up, would love another one like it, can fit a full bale in the back, and no one can accuse it of being a comfortable family machine...

  • Partially, but much more do with being a piss-poor mechanic

  • Yeah - if you compare the benefit in kind rates on these with equiv family cars, they're far more attractive.

    https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/vans/95748/double-cab-pick-up-truck-tax-benefits-explained

For example in France, a double cab is treated similarly to a car for taxation purposes (I think some, but not all are here) whereas a single cab is treated as a commercial vehicle.

  • Whilst I love to sneer at all these people who buy ridiculous cars with capabilities they will never use, I must admit I've spent an awful lot of money in the past year or so putting together a touring bike that's unlikely to get past Monmouth Coffee at Borough Market.

    Same stupidity, smaller budget.

  • It isn't the same stupidity, because you aren't causing congestion, putting other road users at risk, or accelerating environmental collapse.

  • revenant’s right. It’s a different stupidity.

  • It’s a different stupidity.

    Phew. Thank God for that.

  • I have a lot of time for this, but also have a nagging suspicion that it would lead to more vehicles on the road. For example my brother who is a farmer recently swapped a 90 land rover and a car to having just a pickup truck. He can't get away with a single cab as he has 2 kids, so needs something to move them around in. So in that case a pickup seems to be a win as it takes a car off the road.
I suspect I come at this from a rural point of view. The answer is obviously just banning anyone who lives in a city from buying one...

  • Also, if you are getting coffee in Borough market try the Gentleman Barista round the corner from Monmouth. For my money, the coffee is better and they do an excellent Reuben sandwich.

  • Saw them last time I was at Borough (getting coffee from Monmouth).

Will check them out next time I'm in the area.
