What clues do you speak of? This was even hard using Google maps.

I tried without maps but it told me I needed to move 1500 mi to the southeast which isn’t really accurate (at least not on an intuitive level)

Programmatically it makes sense to store only one "location" for each country, and he's designed it so that it's the geographic centre of each country. That's on the help screen.
