I just got copies of all the documents, easy enough to do if you know the dates and locations. You need to send the originals (or the new copies) off so seemed a safer option, particularly with the slow processing.
Also, lots of birth certificates in the UK are the short form ones whereas you need the long one to apply.

Considering both are now printed bits of A4 paper it is terrible that the short form you get for free, but is almost useless, while there is a fee for the long form. Really needs swapping round.
