  • Re the avalanche deaths a few days ago, we're in North Tirol at the moment and have just got back from an epic backcountry tour. We spent about twenty minutes planning our route with the friend we are staying with who is head of the local mountain rescue and also head of training for the Austrian mountain rescue service.

Conditions out there are so tricky and could easily draw you into a sense of false security. You can read the conditions well all day and just wander right into a trap. The problem is wind blown snow sitting on top of frost.

Lots of skiers getting into trouble in this neck of the woods. Another dump coming tonight going to piste ski for a few days I think.

  • This is a massive risk in France too now if there’s a big dump. All the off-piste is now pretty frosted over and there will be no bond between any new snow and what is already there.
