• my dad and grandparents were born in and around belfast and pretty sure he has his birth certificate handy. would i need more proof to commence the application

wow a 3 year wait, not that i'm in any hurry, might speed up a bit now that covid is receding and workers are getting back to the office

  • My mum did the forms as she was applying at the same time (along with my siblings) so it was much easier to collect everything together that way.

If I recall correctly it was birth and marriage certificates for my grandparents (and death certificate for my grandad). Then you had to get the forms signed by a witness (GP etc.). Also my birth certificate and I guess my mum's.

It might be a different process for a parent - I'd have a look on here https://www.dfa.ie/citizenship/born-abroad/registering-a-foreign-birth/

  • If it's your dad I think it's relatively easy. I did it via a grandparent and it took a while to collate all the info and get copy documentation from a few different sources but it wasn't that bad.

That's all for the foreign birth registration. Once you have that the passport is quite straightforward.

I managed to get the registration in 5 months or so but I think they fast tracked it because I needed it before my baby was born so they could get the option to register too.
