  • Tidal offer at the moment 3 months for £1 or £2 for hifi+.

  • Does Tidal have the equivalent of Spotify Radio?

Yes. This is what I use in the car. Select a track before I set off and let the algo take care of the rest of the journey. Can use the car audio buttons to skip tracks I don't like.

  • It's interesting. In my old apartment, I couldn't hear a difference at all. The room wasn't great. Highly reflective and very, very big. But when I moved into my new apartment with a much smaller listening space and a higher concentration of soft furnishings it was immediately apparent. Like, immediately. Spotify sounded highly compressed and like I was listening to something I downloaded from Limewire in 2005.

And yeah @TheButchersDog as @ChasnotRobert says, I usually play an album and then just let it play it's Radio stuff until I can be bothered to choose something else to listen to.

  • Does Tidal have radio of an album like Spotify did / is the algorithm as good?

I really struggled with music choice / interface when I tried it and I don't think I have random tastes... Put me off quite a bit (and I was in the "not sure of the difference" camp too). Am occasionally tempted to try it again and see if my ears are more sensitive...

  • Yes, I guess rooms make it.
Right now the main stereo (nothing exciting, b&w 602, rel sub, decent Yamaha amp and pidac streamer) is in the living room.
Which is 20sqm and has a big sofa, a ceiling high bookshelf filled with books and a thick rug.
But this has become my wife's office, so there is no music listening during daytime.
Will be exciting to move the stuff to my office/guest bedroom which is a bit small with 13sqm.

Let's see if the pi ever manages to update volumio, or if I have to buy something more expensive.

    So, streamer/amp combos, any suggestions?

  • Almost certainly the wrong thread but... are there any tolerable noise cancelling wireless headphones around the 100-150 mark? Its for a bulk buy for work for WfH use

  • I don't think it's as good as Spotify's but it's also not bad at all. It has got SIGNIFICANTLY better than when I first used it a few years ago. I hated it so much, but its totally fine now IMO and is actually quite similar to Spotify.

As a test for you, I played 'The Best of Parliament: Give Up The Funk' and skipped to the end of the last track on the album. It then generated this 'Mix' by itself and carried on playing based on what I was listening to, which seems appropriate.

The pre-made 'mixes' are just as good as Spotify's for me as well. The more I am using it, the more it's getting to know my taste in music and the better the suggestions are in my experience. Given the very low entry point for 90 days of a quid, I think it's worth trying again if you haven't used it in a long time.

Also added some bonus screenshots so you can see what the UI is like now.

  • Try Apple Music instead? You'll get Siri commands back, and will have true lossless without the crappy MQA.

  • I've tried it. Not sure if you've tried using iTunes on Windows recently but IMO it's borderline unusable. Truly prehistoric user interface. Tidal is like living in the year 3000 by comparison.

  • I've been pleased to see Tidal improving it's offer. I use it with Roon and Rekordbox and the Tidal app is a nicer place to be in some ways.

  • Apple music was crap... Did the trial a few months ago and searching is slow, the algorithm shoves terrible suggestions at you. Didn't like. Tidal is still my favourite and have found good new music from their suggested artists. The only fail with tidal is MQA, doesn't play on my phone and there's no sound quality difference. I'm currently trialling quobuz and liking it. Sound is great but maybe the choice is more limited. Will see how it goes.

  • qobuz need to hire one (1) UI/UX designer

  • What do you think is wrong with the Qobuz app? I like it because it's simple.

  • e.g. why are there so many duplicates for "more blood, more tracks"? I assume two of these are singles from the albums - can you not just show "all albums", "all singles", and "all compilations"?

  • Ta for the response - yeah maybe I am expecting too much hoping Tidal will be as good as Spotify for this anyway, since Spotify has all my listening history to pick tracks from - might give Tidal another shot

  • OK - same point re: triplicate and its singles.

good that they have the deluxe vn of "more blood, more tracks" though! spotify doesn't have that

surely a little drop-down like this wouldn't be too hard to implement

  • fair enough, that's definitely confusing singles & albums

  • I'd like a global setting somewhere to not show deluxe editions, extended versions, remasters, etc. 95% of the time I just want to listen to the original album.

  • yes. or they could even include a little ident on top of the album art to flag that it is "remastered", "deluxe" etc so you can see at a glance - i.e. without having to go into the album or mouseover the title - which version is which

  • Forte IV's, very good, imaging amazing, and sound great at low volumes, which is something I was really looking for.

... but they are larger than I expected, so think I'll go try the Hereseys, probably more in my realistic price range...

  • turns out qobuz doesn't have the deluxe version of "more blood, more tracks" - it has a version of that release which allows you to preview thirty seconds of each track. it has a similar version of the "more blood, more tracks" sampler. both versions have no UI element to indicate that they're trial versions only fs. unless I'm missing something?

  • After bigging up Tidal, I now can't sign in on my phone. Annoying.

Have uninstalled and re-installed; same problem.

  • Have you tried changing the password and logging everything out. It's a ballache but worked for me the other day.
