Doing man maths for the new bass purchase. Sold my 2007 Squier Jazz for £200 so i have. head start on budget... thing is, money is tight at the moment and I'm really not a bass player any more so the use per £ equation is against me. I only "need" a bass for occasional home recording. Never thought I'd go back to buying new Squiers at this point in my life, but man £310, for either of these Classic Vibe Ps looks like a great price. A £110 spend to bring home a decent looking new bass vs... ? I can't find a s/h Fender P for under £600.

I don't own a squire P, but there is one sitting in the studio I work in a lot. I bloody love the thing! It sounds great!

The latest video from Tom Bukovac is him and his guitar tech rambling on about compound radius and choking out. Not something I've particularly noticed, but then I've not played too many guitars. I certainly noticed the change when I got my Revstar, but that has a 13 3/4" radius board, which is very flat. Got used to it soon enough though.

Squires are an odd one because they hold thier value so well, people on Bass Chat are asking essentially new prices for their Squires (with the exception of maybe the Affinity series).
It depends on the standard of instrument you're used to playing - if you play them side by side with something higher end you can see/feel/hear why they're cheaper, but equally, they're good enough for most people. And of course, no audience members (outside of other bassists) will ever be able to tell the difference.

Left field suggestion but Cort make some really lovely basses that are far better than they deserve to be a the price...
They change their models specs quite often and this particular one is hard enough to find but there's one for sale here...I'd struggle to look past one of these at that pricepoint...
Honorable mention to vintage Ibanez Blazer/ Roadstar or Peavey Fury (USA made) if you can find one, they're often to be had for around that sort of money and they're excellent!

Yeah it's weird. I'm trawling Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace and to a lesser extent Ebay and Reverb most days and yep, the bargains are hard to come by these days. Lots of Squiers with practically no use for sale at little or no discount to new!
Would love to up-rev to a Fender (I used to have a 50s RI PI bass with the gold anodised pickguard) but money's tight at the mo so I can't really justify it.

I did that with my MIM fretless Jazz and it's incredible now but I spent a small fortune on it, if I hadn't gotten it for a steal it would easily have stood me MIA money to be honest!
Unless you're very set on a traditional P I'd really consider those other options although I do appreciate the lure of the big F.

Tried the positive grid spark thing for a few weeks, found myself using the same setting every time I fired it up, found the modelling thing a bit wasted on me, so I’ve moved it on and I’m looking for a more traditional amp, mostly for headphone use initially, but with the option to play through a speaker. Reverb or an fx loop ideally.
Keep coming back to an orange terror stamp - anything else I should consider for about €200-250? Would I be better off with say a crush 35?

Bugera V5 Infinium looks nice if you fancied going for valves? Has a headphone output and reverb but no FX loop...
What sort of sound are you after?

Actually scratch that... how about a Supro Delta King 8

So ultimately the setting I consistently chose on the spark was a plexi with a fuzz or overdrive in front, and reverb in the loop. So I guess that’s the goal.
I initially bought a Marshall origin 5, but even in low power mode it needed to be at 50% before it sounded good, and that was too loud with a new born baby in the house. So valves would be lovely, but maybe more than what I need right now.

Friedman BE-Mini could be of interest?
Perhaps paired with a Zilla cab or else a DIY cab would be a fun project if you were so inclined?

Looks nice but no headphone out

30W wouldn't be baby-compatible volume, would it?
I see Blackstar have made some pedals with valves in that include a cab sim and have DI and headphone outs, for around £230:

Their little HT-1RH are probably worth checking out, though I have never used one.

Might be ok, since it’s solid state. I wouldn’t buy it without trying it first, though.

Nice ideas man! There’s a funky 80s Vox bass on gumtree I was kinda tempted by too but really I just want a P (har har).

I’m off for day of psych rock jamming with my drummer buddy I’m his studio tomorrow. Plugged in both amps and the big pedal board with the SG to try yesterday, sounding epic.

Is that a giant fuzz factory or just a distorted picture?

Found this for £8 in local charity shop yesterday:

3/4 length entry level acoustic. One string missing. Combination of steel and nylon strings. Wierd pink white emulsion paint job. Some sharp frets along the neck. Despite all that plays quite well and nice sounds from the steel strings.

Off to buy new strings this morning and give it a proper clean up.

It’s just the fisheye photo. Bog standard FF. I used to hate it as a fuzz then I realised that’s not why it’s for. It’s amazing for making glitchy farty splatty synth sounds. Which what I do half the times me these days!
