• psyching ourselves up for round 2 of try to get benny to eat raw food.
32 (individual 250g) packs of frozen raw food just gone in the freezer. need a day or two for first pack to defrost in fridge so will be reducing his food today/tomorrow to build up an appetite then feed him in afternoon on thursday and see how it goes...

put out half a pack with a tiny bit of creme fraiche mixed in and a very light dusting of parmesan (which he is mad about) to try and entice him to get close enough to try it and to my surprise he actually started eating it once he'd licked all the nice stuff off... leaving an empty bowl.

I thought better not push it and put the rest out as he'll probably walk away and then it'll go off. but he sat by the bowl staring at me and licking his chops. I put a tiny bit more out without any fancy stuff and it vanished immediately. so I broke and put the rest out. he not only ate the lot but licked the bowl clean, he then went and found a chicken chew he had stashed in his bed in the dining room, ate that and then returned to give the bowl another licking.

it's absolutely baffling, this is how I had expected him to act when presented with a bowl of meat but first time around he literally would not even put one morsel of it in his mouth no matter what I mixed it with. If he keeps it up though I will be absolutely over the moon. the way he put away that 250g though I think the manufacturers feeding guide is a little pessimistic about how much he'll need per day. But I'll take it if we can get him eating on a regular schedule again.

  • nice one!
glad Benny has come round to it.

Apparently because the raw food has less sugar/ additives than the canned stuff, it is less "addictive" and dogs tend to eat less of it (or be less "FEED ME FEED ME")
However, judging by the fact Bosco licks the pattern off the bowl at every meal time I call bollocks.

  • Possible that the first time round he was just not feeling well? Or not hungry

  • I think this is going to be our year of the dog.

Our family of four would like a small to medium sized dog that likes being cuddled, but can chill out on its own without crying, likes being walked, won't kill our kids, won't bond and become possessively jealous over one human - but if it forms a special bond with my eldest daughter that would be rad as fuck thanks, doesn't have underlying health conditions (I have enough of them for the family ta), no bulgy eyes, no snubby nose/docked tail/clipped ear business, no yappy barking and must like bands like GNOD.

    So far:
    Staffs.

  • Most of those requirements are trainable rather than breed specific, although there are certainly breeds to avoid if 'ability to chill out' is important. I'm looking at you, spaniels.

  • Lurcher. You can have one of mine after it fucked off after a deer this morning and returned covered in its own blood leading to a dash to the vets.

edit - maybe not the most cuddly.

  • Aren’t they quite powerful for their size?
Everyone is breed biased imho, so I’ll put forward the worlds most obvious choice- Labrador.
They’re challenging enough to engage the kids, and they are genuinely magical.
Get a fine working bitch and you’ll get all the love you could ever want.
I had a little cry earlier as her face reminded me of Calvin and Dora came and just licked the hell out of me.

  • Fuck yes! Good dog.

  • Staffies aren't for everyone, but they do meet most of your criteria. Underlying health conditions can be minimised by not getting a chunky designer blue one...

If you want a test drive, pop round and we can take mine to the park.

  • In other Staff x Bull terrier news my parents no longer foster Flash the food obsessed old girl

  • She’s now a permanent member of their household

  • Back in January last year, I posted that my friend had rescued two tiny newborn puppies from a bin on xmas eve.... Here are the not so little puppies now! They're ridiculously cuddly and love being picked up/sitting on laps, never mind how big they are now. Strawberry (fluffy boy) and Potato (ginger girl) are living their best lives.

  • it was a protracted battle over a few weeks and he probably ate less than double the amount he ate today across that entire period. but would eat pretty much anything that wasn't the raw food.

it could have been a duff batch of tripe or something that found its way into all of the various flavours we got the first time and he was just trying not to eat something he could tell was wrong. i need to check the dates on that stuff as it's still in the freezer at my mums so if it's still ok will be interesting to see how he reacts to it next time he's down there.

  • I’m sure it’s just because I’m half looking out for it, but there appears to be A LOT of evidence of dogs with similar issues on the streets of Hackney at the moment. Vet was also saying Mars was the 6th Gastro case he’d seen that day last week which was pretty out of the ordinary. Not really sure what you can do to avoid it as an owner but does appear to be rife

Its a thing. As in there's a national surge in gastro in dogs and it has been reported on in the press for a few weeks now.

  • that last image looks surprisingly like benny from that angle except the black streaks in the fur would be fox poo in his case.

Did you go with paleoridge in the end? If so, I doubt there was anything wrong with the meat. Its also good, frozen, for at least a year and probably up to a week once defrosted, at a pinch.

I reckon its more that Benny is a fussy eater and is trying to stick to what he is used to. Its quite a big metabolic change for a dog, to switch from highly processed proteins and carbs to a fresh meat diet.

  • Its a thing. As in there's a national surge in gastro in dogs and it has been reported on in the press for a few weeks now.

the stuff on the yorkshire coast was linked to dredging in the area bringing up a load of nasty shit into the coastal water, proper scary stuff how ill it made the dogs.

  • yeah paleoridge both times.

  • Have you considered a rescue? We got Crumpet through Underdog International. We just told them what we needed from a dog (good with kids, good with cats, able to live in a busy city etc) and they matched us with the perfect pup for our circumstances.

  • Rescue is my preferred tbh.

  • must like bands like GNOD.

Staffies are exclusively into either Britpop or acid house, although all dogs like the Happy Mondays.

  • Yeah had heard of the Yorkshire stories in the press but hadn’t heard about much of it in London.

Mars still isn’t right and we’re now collecting 3 days worth of samples as the vets have requested checking it out. Having to be creative in getting water into him as we’re nervous about dehydration but fortunately he now appears to have lots of energy after not doing much apart from sleeping for the first few days. If anyone’s dog does show signs of gastro then it’s probably worth getting them to a vet a little more quickly than usual

  • The saddest man

Rory Cellan Jones, the BBC Tech journalist, sadly lost his dog to it last week.

I was at the vet with a rodent this week and they said there is a lot of dog gastro in London at the moment.
