I did that with my MIM fretless Jazz and it's incredible now but I spent a small fortune on it, if I hadn't gotten it for a steal it would easily have stood me MIA money to be honest!
Unless you're very set on a traditional P I'd really consider those other options although I do appreciate the lure of the big F.

Yeah it's weird. I'm trawling Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace and to a lesser extent Ebay and Reverb most days and yep, the bargains are hard to come by these days. Lots of Squiers with practically no use for sale at little or no discount to new!
Would love to up-rev to a Fender (I used to have a 50s RI PI bass with the gold anodised pickguard) but money's tight at the mo so I can't really justify it.
