Still love a crepe sole though, there’s something slightly disreputable (again, in my head) about wearing them to work.
And wearing them in court (not as a defendant, at least in my head) is delicious, full rapture.

Lumpy heels (haglunds deformity in my case and indeed narrow heel) eat shoes if fit not good. If at all similar to mine take care as I have previously caused bursitis by continuing to wear once throughout through to plastic heel cup.
I have no real answer other than trying lots of shoes. I need the heel to be well below/above my lump and minimal sliding. I sometimes use heel lock lacing. I previously have used duct tape, sniper tape or even glued in shiny orthopaedic foam, but I think these all need applying prophylactically. On the Scarpa recommendation and similar in styling I have these https://www.bergzeit.co.uk/scarpa-mojito-basic-shoe/ sole a reasonably robust vibram number and lacing to toe should allow a fine tuned fit for most.

I had a near death experience after slipping on wet stone wearing worn Clark's desert shoes. I came to to find my neighbours standing over me telling me that an ambulance was on its way.
Since then I have avoided crepe soles.

Thanks - yes, I have worn ill fitting shoes for too long in the past so now try to avoid against my natural instinct that "it'll probably be ok".

Shit, glad you’re ok

EDIT: They're these - https://www.vestiairecollective.com/men-shoes/boots/paraboot/black-leather-paraboot-boots-20731292.shtml
lots of similar things available - Loake Anglesey - google 'Apron Boot' and have a look

Stupid question alert!
How do you know when shoes are too small? I have replaced an existing pair of Trickers shoes with the exact same model but 0.5 size smaller (sale price I couldn't pass up on).
Clearly they are 'box fresh' and feeling stiffer/snugger in general, and I am trying to figure out where and how much they are likely to stretch. Also, what are the tell-tale signs that they are just too tight and should be returned?

If I weighed 10kg less than I do now I would fit very nicely into my father's ikelys for a quick walk around the garden. If I had them now they would be wasted gathering dust due to pressure /contact around the end of third and fourth toe, no good walking especially down hill, and they're made forlots of walking.

Can you wiggle your toes? Do your feet splay over the sides of the soles? Do your toes touch the end of the shoes already? If so, sack them off. Generally my rule is if at any point my toes touch the end of the shoes, they're too small. I have 2E width feet so my issue is generally width rather than length. Length is the easy bit when buying shoes IMO, it's things like last shape and width that matter more.

I can wiggle my toes and believe there is space between the big toe and end of shoes. Some slight pinching/snugness by the little (pinky?) toe which is the key point I am unsure on. General shoe is snugger feeling than my other pair although to be expected for 0.5 size bigger and 6+ years of wear.

Having bought several pairs of shoes in the sales slightly too small (also bc I have big feet) in general I never think this ends well. Sorry but probably better than saying you could break them in and then not being able to return them.
If they were a suede/informal construction could be different

Guys, why do you have to do me dirty like this...
I think I know you are right but man I have been after these shoes (woodstock) in this colour (black) for ages and a 50%+ discount was just too tempting. Drat!

• #8369
What size?
Also think that makes them £250ish - they might be fine, could stretch them etc just whether you fancy the risk -
• #8370
I'm typically UK9.5/EU44, these are a UK9.
From here which has a pretty decent discount on a number of models, made better by a 10% additional discount for new customers (WELCOME10 for those interested). I phoned to check stock and was told they were no longer stocking these models hence the healthy discount.
I'll phone some cobblers tomorrow for advice before admitting defeat.

Eu 44 is uk 10 according to Trickers size chart. I have trickers on the same 4497 last and for me they’re true to size. I’d say send em back, if you’re committed try shoe healer in Doncaster. They’ll be able to stretch them but would need to put new bigger soles on because the soles won’t stretch . Will cost about £100

Yes, the Woodstock is very nice. I'd send 'em back. Pinching at the small toe is never good.

• #8373
Should maybe have left the EU size out in this instance. I have existing pair of the same model/last (different colour and well past their best) in a UK9.5 which fit perfectly.
Interesting to know about the stretching process and rough costs. Takes them up to near RRP which clearly makes it not worthwhile. Oh well, next time hopefully!

Replacing crepe sole with a rubber one - feel like this has been discussed before…

Love these… shame about the crepe sole…

The flooring in big train stations in the UK can be lethal with crepe soles although genuine amusement was caused by someone of no stature and gravitas apparently break dancing across the concourse. Naturally I styled it out (in my head) and continued with my day.
