He was on £300k a week though, right? That's £25m+ over the remainder of his contract. If he wasn't going to play then it's better to get that off your books.

not sure the issue for Arsenal about letting him go. seems like they had to. it's more that they have not brought anyone in.

It was the rational decision to move him on, given where they had go to. I think they should never have got into that position. Then again, a lot of clubs make ridiculously expensive mistakes.
