I would unplug and do a continuity test across the switch for each pole.
I assume you are getting zero volts as the switch is shorting the two lines (through the motor) have you checked the brushes?
After dismantling the whole thing it turns out the cable was dodgy. Don’t know why I didn’t test that first!
