  • Cheeky whatsit!

  • I just got some Klipsch speakers (just the R-41m) early as my birthday present. They are not an early birthday present, I just have them here and I thought I should check they are working ;-)

I hooked one up for comparison to the cheap Gales I’m using with my turntables. I don’t know what I was expecting, but the difference was very apparent, so much so I thought the balance to the Gale was off or that it was broken. The Klipsch just sounded way, way clearer and alive vs flat and dead.

Looking forward to setting them up with a new amp (Cambridge Audio axa25 for an old Technics one).

  • booked a demo with Klipsch forte IVs.. with the option to trial at home if I want to after an hour or so in store.. should be interesting, they're very different from LS50s from what I understand, but the differences all look appealing to me, they're for the living room so the LS50s would stay either way.

Other options I might look at JBL l82/100..

  • Noooooooooooooooice. Good luck. Really like the look of Forte's. The KLH Model Five could be worth a look as well. Not sure about UK availability though.

  • oh good shout I haven't seen or heard of them, criteria is engaging, dynamic, not analytical. Must look in keeping with mid century living room, no generic speaker stands.

  • People seem to have been raving about them for their price. I am kind of semi looking into them for the same reason. My Totem's don't look out of place too much, but something like the KLHs would definitely look better in my space. They seem like a more budget friendly version of something from Graham or Harbeth - and they come with stands. At $999 each they seem like a really great value proposition - purely according to reviews. I've not heard them.

  • keen to hear what you think of the klipsch. They seem to divide opinion, some people love them but others think they aren't 'accurate'.
    Accuracy is overrated imo though

    Wharfedale Lintons?

  • Harbeth, Stirling Broadcast or Graham Audio.

BBC all the way old bean.

  • I've always wanted to buy a 1950s radiogram and replace the electronics with good stuff

  • They so bad. IMO. Okay so bad is unfair but I found them very shouty and lackluster. Just boring to listen to.

  • Kinda think it's a waste of time auditioning anywhere but your home so that's the right move.
I love the look of vintage but I'm used to a more detailed modern sounding speaker.
Let me know what you think of the Forte's.

Really don't like the look of the foam grilles on JBL l82/100.
And with kids would need to stay on.

  • They seem to divide opinion

    As do all speakers.

  • Accuracy is overrated imo though

I feel its like a living environment light. Sure you can go for pure white, it's accurate, but what you'll probably want is a warm white light which adds depth and warmth to your room. Something inviting, something that adds to an already loving home.

    ...Unless you're a surgeon...

  • Kinda think it's a waste of time auditioning anywhere but your home so that's the right move.

    This is the right move.

But a shop audition means you can reduce the things to audition at home.

Plus a lot of places only do home auditions if you effectively purchase, you can swap later but you're committing yourself to the retailer. Shop auditions are worth it then just to get to 90%+ confidence that this the l is the stuff you are going to buy.

After that, only putting it in the space you intend for it is going to really let you know.

  • you can go for pure white, it's accurate, but what you'll probably want is a warm white

You can have "warm" (low correlated colour temperature) and accurate (high colour rendering index) at the same time.

  • Holographic imaging, and immediacy and speed in the transients?

  • You can have "warm" (low correlated colour temperature) and accurate (high colour rendering index) at the same time

  • 90+ CRI & 2700k FTW

  • Bought the A30 and other than an annoying issue with the screen, really happy. I've reused a mate's S1 Sonos Zoneplayer 80 with optical out to the A30 and some Dali speakers and I've got a decent enough sound. So thanks!

  • Well, I finally cancelled Spotify Premium after a decade+ and I think I might keep it that way. I'd been running Tidal and Spotify in tandem for a few months and ultimately sacked off Spotify due to its inferior sound quality. And yes, I can tell a difference on my stereo. But the other issue was simply shoving podcasts in my face. I don't want to listen to Podcasts, Spotify.

My favourite thing about Tidal so far though has been 'My Daily Discovery', which is fifteen suggested songs every day versus Spotify's Discovery Weekly.

However, one issue is that when I drive, I use Siri via CarPlay to tell Spotify what music to play so that I don't have to take my eyes off the road. Unfortunately Tidal doesn't support voice commands and that is kind of an issue but I'm sure I'll get over it pretty quickly.

  • Got so many playlists on Spotify that I can't face losing it.
Just wish the Hifi lossless release would get a move on.

  • Same. I used Soundiiz to migrate. Cost $4.99. Great value for money. I lost some tracks but I have ten years of playlists. I couldn't tell you what I lost tbh and I doubt I'll ever know or notice.

  • Updating volumio on my player right now and about to give tidal a go.
Almost certain that I will not hear a difference.

  • Great intel: re Soundiiz
Does Tidal have the equivalent of Spotify Radio? ie Plays tracks based on artist/track.
Find so much new stuff that way.
