Clutch derailleurs

  • Anyone ever done a 1X conversion without a clutch derailleur?

They seem to be in short supply and I'm wondering if I can get away with running a narrow-wide chainring and doing without a new RD.

It's for my cross bike so not dropping the chain is pretty important.

  • It'll totally work of course, but is more likely to drop the chain. Could you leave a front derailleur fixed in the correct position to act as a chain guide?

  • I was thinking about doing that. It’ll look a bit ugly, but if it works, it works

  • It works ok for general riding with the b-screw tension turned up high but it doesn't work in race conditions-the chain will drop every other lap!

  • Cheers, maybe it's worth just running 2x until I can get hold of a new RD.
