Will 35c semi-slick Gravelkings be alright under 45mm Bleumels or would be the 53mm be a better bet? What's the downside to having excess space under your guards?

No real downside beyond aesthetics. It does a better job keeping the slop inside if wider and gives more room to avoid stuff getting jammed.

I might return the 45mm version I ordered and get some 53s then! I might like some fatter tyres at some point anyway. Thanks for that.
