Ah nice - gonna read this tonight

Another recommendation for strength training. I couldn't seem to stretch off my tight hamstrings but my physio said i had weak hamstrings in relation to my quads so deadlifts did the trick for me. It's really easy to use the foam roller too much especially when injured often doing more harm than good but as runners and cyclists i bet over 90% of us don't do enough S&C myself included. I'm guilty of only getting back on it when a little tweak or twinge reminds me that I need to. When your short on time the gym work is always the first type of training to get dropped.

Yeah i definitely agree, that said i really like the gym. I found it really useful to have sessions with a sports physio & PT as it did two things:
Gave me a range of exercises to focus on, enough to be able to have varied workouts.
Provided me with the confidence in how to do those exercises and also that I could go much heavier than I expected (which is important for running).eg when I started I would single leg press 60-70kg and think I was doing well but they said I should be looking to get close to double that as the force you put through your leg is roughly equivalent to double your weight. I was soon up to 100kg+ And whilst I’ve never managed double my BW this assurance was really useful.
The other thing is I throw in some more ‘vanity’ exercises at the gym bc doing a very focussed compound session can be kinda boring so mixing it up a little can help. -

In the great shoe debate.
Been running road miles in some Air Pegasus 38s. Find them really nice to run in. Comfortable and a really nice fit whether it's 5k or 25k.
But interestingly when I go back to my Speedgoats, I now find them uncomfortable and too cushioned, where as before when running road miles in Evelon 2 they were very comfortable on the trails.
Really tempted to go back to thr pegasus trails, version 3 now. But the sole was really un-durable on the 2.
Hmm.

Dunno if it’s related to the shoes but I’ve almost never heard anyone say a good thing about ON running shoes.
ON sponsored my running club for a while, so I know a weirdly high number of people who like them (but still less than half the people who tried them). My friend's mum accidentally backed the car over his pair today, which feels like some sort of omen.

Fair do’s - I’ve never owned a pair so cannot speak from experience but just what I’ve read

I have a pair of their trail shoes which I was testing to see how they felt, and they're fine.
They do have a habit of only lasting 300km, but then again my ultra-runner neighbour really rates them. -

The first incarnation of the show was is fairly dull colours. I’d probably go full rave yellow and black

My spikes expired at the weekend after 800ft of ascent in Epping forest.
I tried some Adidas xcs tinman spikes in two sizes but they felt weird. I've got three sets of spikes coming over the next few days, at least two pairs will get returned.
How long before shoe shops stop selling me stuff?

I’m glad the above messages have a similar sentiment regarding On shoes. I was given a voucher for Christmas so decided to use it on some shoes as I was about to buy some new ones anyway. I’ve done about 60km in them so far but after every run I’ve got weird aches and pains. I’ll keep going with them for a while but I’m relegating them to easy and short runs for the time.

Got an entry into the Dublin marathon this year. I entered the lottery half thinking I wouldn't get in. Guess I better run it now!
I've been running a couple of years now (since the first lockdown pretty much) and my longest run is a half. My plan is to keep training as I am (80/20 easy to hard runs, mixture of tempo/intervals and a long run every week) slowly upping the long runs and total mileage and then start a specific marathon plan closer to the race.
Does that sound about right?

Does anyone know a flat fast London 10k in March or April?

• #27089
Findarace is a decent search tool

Got a place in CCC (UTMB) lottery for this year having applied 4 years in a row! Very excited and great to have a goal again! Unfortunately I was so sure I wouldn't get a place I have done next to no research and am now panicking everything is going to be booked up fast... Has anyone got any useful logistics advice / prior experience?
My first question is do people tend to hire cars for supporters to get around or is the bus / lift service sufficient???
I'm also assuming it is best to stay in Chamonix and get a bus to Courmayeur for the start?
Anyone know where else I should be looking for an idiots guide to planning for this?
Just to be clear this isn't a cry for training advice, I'll worry about that later!
Thanks very much!

Someone in my running group chat genuinely believes that breathing cold air will make your lungs bleed and you will choke on the blood and die. They are adamant about this and think everyone is being so careless running in winter.
Just wanted to share as it's absolutely tickled me. -

Don't laugh too hard in cold air.

The RunThrough event that @duncs has listed would be a good one. Viccy Park's a nice venue for a flat, fast race. The other regular bet is the Sri Chinmoy races in Battersea Park. I see they've got a 10k on 26th March.

Awesome!
No real advice having done the race but I’d deffo stay in or close to Cham, as 1 it’s ace and 2 I’d find the idea of running home motivational!
We stayed with a friend who was doing a the race pre covid in this place.. they rented the place for the summer and then just had people to stay most weeks and chip in to the costs, think they are doing it again this year, now I think of it, but they are lucky that jobs allow them to do it!

Cool thanks, that chalet looks superb!
Yeah, definitely like the idea of running "home"! I think in theory (assuming I finish) I'll be able to cross the line, eat every croissant in sight, mooch around for the day soaking up the atmosphere and then in the evening watch the UTMB elite finishing before crashing out myself hopefully!

Any suggestions for a trail shoe with following criteria:
Decent cushioning (I’m an ultraboost fan)
Decent grip (but a mix of road/trails so not too aggressive)
Lightweight(ish)I’m doing more distance and my current trail shoes are about 5 years old and my feet and calves (calfs?) are taking a beating

I'm loving my Brooks Cascadia, which are sold as a decent all-rounder. Just found them instantly comfortable and pretty good on mixed surfaces. They aren't an all-out off-road mud muncher necessarily though. Always try some on (and buy from) at your LRS!

• #27099
They did at one point release a trail version of the ultraboost, not sure if you can still get it.

Looks like Decathlon are getting into the carbon sole shoe game as Yoann Kowal posted a photo of a Kiprun prototype yesterday
New trainers obvs.
Running on incline could be more comfy because of the pelvic position - so maybe try so hip/pelvic/lower back strengthening and mobility exercises too
