Yes, though they only need the licence because they'll need export documents at some point. You don't need a licence just to have a cat normally. You do need one for a dog, the rules vary by city but in general certain breeds are banned, there are size limits depending on how centrally you live and you're only allowed one dog per person - until a few years ago, each city would have "dog registration day" and you had to go to the police station on that day with your dog... It was carnage. Dogs everywhere. Dogs having passport photos taken. Chaos.

Blimey. Sounds like fun. What country is this?
-
• #12106
China. Taking rules and administrative overreach to the next level and then some.
-
• #12107
Yeah, China. Lots of rules but as with most things here, there's ways round them. I know so many people with 2+ dogs, you just get a friend to register one under their name. Or if you have a "too big" dog then you only walk it at night.

That's a great cat / great photo of you two by the way 🙂

It depends on where you live, for example within the third ring of Beijing it's one size, the fourth ring is slightly bigger, fifth ring is bigger still. Some cities enforce the rules more than others, a friend has a 50kg Newfie in central Shanghai and that seems to be fine. I think you can have any size cat as they'll be indoors (if a pet).

That’s actually my wife 🙂

Wow. Do cats have to have their licence on them at all times?
-
• #12113
No, and you don't have to licence your cat if you don't want to, it's only if you plan to move abroad or maybe some other special circumstances.
Dogs must be licenced and I think you technically have to have the licence with you every time you take your dog out (though also technically I'm meant to have my passport on me at all times). -

I adopted another cat from a family who are leaving the UK. Pickle (just been snipped yesterday) is 8 months and a boy, very loving and just wants cuddles and to play. Sadly my resident female cat Stella (has been spayed) is having a hard time accepting him... I've got to the point where they can eat seeing each other from either side of a mesh screen but if they sniff eachother through a cracked open door then Stella starts growling. Its really frustrating as Pickle couldnt care less and just wants to meet her and be friends. And she gets on fine with the neighbours cat... sigh. Its a long road and my partner works long hours so its just myself?; at home herding cats from one room to another so Pickle isnt locked in one room for the day.
Pickle is below helping me write this post

Cats are largely solitary animals and don’t really get on well with other cats. Stella now this interloper in the house, which has always been her territory, and she’s understandably upset about it. She also has to share you, which she’s not had to do before. Cats are quite protective of what’s theirs and this is going to be quite upsetting for her.
There’s not a great deal you can do about it - Stella might eventually tolerate Pickle to a point, but she won’t ever be happy about it. Personally I wouldn’t introduce another cat into my house because I know my cat well enough, and she’d hate it. -

The thing is this winter she’s been crying and crying at the neighbours door for the cat to come out but as he’s older and wiser..he doesn’t come out in the cold haha. So we thought to get her a friend- if only life were that easy.
I think slowly and surely she is getting used to him, just needs to accept him in her territory. We’re onto the last step of Jackson Galaxy ; playing in the same room but separately which is going alright.

Just took a phonecall from our neighbour. A couple who lived in the area two years ago just remembered Waily and drove all the way from Feltham to take him to Battersea! Thankfully she stopped them.
Bit of background, Waily's original owner died just before we moved in six years ago and had no family so Waily got left behind. Our neighbour started looking after him and then he made friends with other neighbours and now there's about 6 of us who look after him, us being the main one he comes to. Time to get him chipped I think!

The couple was one of the six parties that look after the cat, and they came and wanted to take the cat with them to Battersea?

That's kind of mad. Waily is clearly being looked after, why would they 'rescue' him without checking with anyone - what did they think he'd been doing for the last 2 years?!
-
• #12122
No they decided to come and get him to take to Battersea dogs and cats home 2 years after moving away.

that's too bizarre for words...

Is your vet ok with that? Our vet had a cat killed in the waiting room by a dog a few years ago!

I took Méabh for her rabies vaccine today and the vet said that Méabh needs to go on a diet as she's now 4.2kg. Here's Méabh looking sad at being fat shamed.
