• Hello

For years now I've been riding an 80s Raleigh Competition (bought from here in 2011!) that I've converted to single speed, replaced the drop bars with risers etc. I love it, and still get a lot of joy riding it to and from work and around town. I'm 6ft4in and its a 60cm frame, so it's a little small for me, but I've just put the seat post up really high and its comfortable.

However, I need to start transporting my child on the bike with a child seat and after fitting it, it looks like my bike seat is so high up that its going to prevent her from actually getting into it. I've tried altering the seat position but it just makes it really uncomfortable to ride. I get back pain quite easily so little changes like that can make it totally unridable.

I've decided it might be time to switch to a new bike - something bigger, something with some gears probably, some modern brakes for safety and wheels that don't fall off (happened once). Ideally it wouldn't weigh a ton either. I'm not loaded so I'll be looking for something around £500 second hand. I've not looked for a new bike for a long time so I don't really know what's good these days other than some of the vintage frames I see other people riding.

Any tips for brands, models etc that I should keep my eye out for on here, eBay and so on? I've already got a child seat that mounts to the seat tube if that's of any help.

    Thanks!

If you're putting a child seat on it, it's difficult to go wrong with a 90s-onward rigid frame mountain bike. The added frame stiffness and longer wheelbase makes the bike a lot more stable when the child seat is on. They do come in large sizes, but they're not so common and you might have to look for a while until one comes up. Your budget will be easy peasy for a nice frame, set of strong wheels and an ex higher-end set of gears like 10-speed SRAM X0.

Don't forget to ask in the large frames thread!

  • I'll look into this. Used to ride mountain bikes when I was a kid in the 90s. I'll dig out my old copies of MBUK and see what Kona's and DMRs were cool back then.
