  • You can buy head units for £3 from Wickes, if you're unsure

  • Just need to measure correctly! Took the cap off the one in the next room to try and it didn't fit.

  • While we're on the subject of TRVs. Is this what's called a RAVL connection? The old TRV head is kaput but the valve seems to be fine.

  • Much appreciated for linking this easy to follow guide, it's the video I was using yesterday. My issue is the left side of the radiator just won't lift off the wall mount, no matter how much I heave. I think the floor board that side needs to be lifted or trimmed to allow the copper pipe to move upwards.

@fredtc good to know removing the rad completely if needed isn't that bad. My main issue was with refilling the system as feared I'd be responsible for buggering up our heating in January of all months. After watching a few vids on refilling the system think I've got my head around this now, thank god for YouTube.

  • buy a replacement trv head - most are compatible from what i know with that connection

  • when you refill the system add some inhibitor while your at it. if you have towel rad in the bathroom, might be easier for you to pour it in there and that will run round the system for you.

  • Thats what i'm wanting to do - just want to make sure i'm buying the right type as my valves don't have a screw thread one them. Just this click type connector.

  • had a look:

    is this it? or this?

  • We're having the same problem in our new (old) place. We've noticed the directional valve is on backwards. We think the balancing is all wrong and also I'm sure the rad is old and full of crud.
All our rads are imperial or I'd have spent a day swapping everything over to modern type 11/21 depending on room. Extension tails are making it less appealing to me.

  • Morning,

Personally, I am concerned about messing about with a heating system when I need it to work.

But the trick is make sure both valves can fully shut. Then as others have shown the technique to get behind the rad. I'd support the bottom of the rad too.

  • Not try to teach you to duck eggs but did building control come out to the property? As that sounds like a self cert by the builder, as I would hope building control would be better on the visible stuff.

    Good luck.

  • Yeah, I think it the first one too. Valve head is 25mm across which makes sense once you tighten the clip down from 26mm. Cheers

  • Thanks all, as expected lifting the floor board has given me enough slack to lift/rotate the rad. Ta!

  • Moved it yesterday. Great success. Was a bastard to do as the engineered wood flooring had been laid after the cooker was in place, so it had to be lifted, then moved forward.

It was possible to lift it with two blokes (me + local repair guy) first rocking it forward, then pulling the front up and over the edge of the floor on to cardboard sheets, then slid out.

  • I thought that.

Apparently the building control did visit as the property as development is a wee bit contentious with the neighbours. Turns out that because the entire roof was constructed without scaffolding the inspector could only do his job from the ground floor, and presumably left with a large, brown envelope in his pocket.

    All together now:

    rolling rolling rolling,
    Keep them wagons rolling,
    Rolling rolling rolling, rawhide!

  • Do you know if it was council BC or third party?

Down here I have used both, the council one was a real stickler for the rules, with zero flex from the regs, the third party one would literally sign anything off. Could really do with something in the middle...

  • the entire roof was constructed without scaffolding

    wut

  • Suggestions for hanging spare wheels welcome. We have the bikes hanging like this and I’d like to store a spare set of wheels - on a hook of some kind? - either to the right or left (preferably left, to be honest).

I had school style coat pegs in our last place, but a) they reminded me of school; and b) the wheels stood too proud from the wall, on a slight angle.

  • Can't you just have a hook hanging down on one side, then use a tie or some sort of hook, maybe 2 s-hooks to hang the other wheel off that?

    Sort of like a chain.

  • This is actually a good solution - I was focused on wall-mounted, but hanging from the shelf is a better idea.

    Thanks!

  • Also very tidy! Thanks.

(I love the paint on the gravel bike)

  • I was trying to figure out a decent solution for this in my cellar earlier, these look ideal!

Ta :) Gotta give hoops credit for that!
