  • So broken headlight adjuster...the car has been apart for 22 days.

    Shall we take bets on how long before I sort the car out? Or just reassemble the headlamp as is.

  • Oh no I was saying the differences in mpg between 70 & 80mph were noticeable for me, probably around 25-35mpg I'd estimate.

    Completely agree on the whole "Why not spend money on things you love" bit, was just some mentioned of 150mph+ on the previous page got me thinking!

    Borrowed a friends turbo'd 'busa that had a very low MPG. But smiles per gallon were through the roof.

  • I managed a journey of 1 mpg in an Aston Martin V8. Then I ran out of petrol on the Westway. I wasn't going fast - that's what the car always did when it was warming up. I picked it up just north of St Pancras and it was on reserve. By the time I got to Paddington it was dry.

  • I was averaging 130kph for hours yesterday. Makes a big difference to how practical it is to travel long distances vs the uk, where I’d average (in London) 10kph and (out of London) 80kph.

    I do wish my van had a 100 litre tank, 70 is a bit low.

  • On the autoroutes 130km is fine, and you can do it for hundreds of km without slowing sometimes (three Christmases ago I drove from Calais to Le Mans without seeing a single other vehicle).
    PΓ©ages are too much of a slowdown even with the Bip&Go tag. I once got chased by the police out of one when I roared out of the gate and shot up the motorway past everyone else. When they caught up and I was quietly doing 130 in a queue of other cars they kept going for a bit and then turned the sirens off.

    France is huge though, and 130 is only 80mph. I wish the limits were higher. If you’re heading to Italy, Switzerland or Austria going through Germany is so much faster.

  • France was once a free for all. Speeding and drink-driving in rural areas were normal. The death rate was twice what it is here. But in 2002 five firemen attending a car crash were killed by a speeding driver. Chirac made a speech about it and attitudes started to change. Since then there've been a series of road safety campaigns, most of which have had public support.

  • In a country that you can have your licence revoked for drink driving and still drive on the road.

    Don't think the attitude has changed much in those that were driving before 2002.

  • Wine at lunch is almost a religion for many French.

  • many years ago, driving in france, I braked too hard on some loose gravel on freshly laid tarmac, spun off the road and hit a tree. Car (french registered Citroen I had borrowed off a friend) was written off, I was going about 40kph at the time of the crash.

    Gendarmerie turn up and ask me lots of questions, i can hardly speak any french, all fairly relaxed and a lot of nodding and talk of gravillons.

    After we have been hanging around for about an hour waiting for a tow truck, the officers make to leave and then at the last minute, almost like they had forgotten, get me to do a breath test. It was only later that I realised, due to the time of day, they had assumed I would have had a glass or two of wine with lunch and were giving me the best chance of passing the test.

  • Drove back from Uttoxeter yesterday, used the M6 for a bit. I wish I'd have had a private motorway for the whole trip.

  • It's also Β£100k more than Model 3 directly below it and Β£50k more than the S Plaid below that...

    Lovely looking things but it's easy to get more range when you just charge loads and wang a massive battery in it.

  • Short answer. Yes.

    Long answer:
    My friend won the 2nd last series, not the most recent where he came 2nd. He went on to compete in Gymkhana Grid which is organised by Ken Block and won the overall title for RWD class beating Daigo Saito along the way. In his supercharged road legal Mk2 MX5. He shared a podium with WRC champion and World Rallycross champion, Petter Solberg.

    More recently, one of our friends and teammate bought the Formula G series from the person/team that run it, so I now help him organise Formula G.

    So what can I help with?
