36,500km in 365 days - Cycling Against Living Miserably

It's Day 359 and I'm at 35,940km so it's going pretty well to finish on Saturday. I'm really enjoying these final days, the weather has been kind too. The bearings in my hunt wheels have decided to go so I've swapped to the 650b wheels that i own. At this point in time it just makes me smile about the wear of components, i definitely rate the hunt hubs (bitex?) as they have lasted a long time with little service.

I’m sure hunt would like to hear your review given what you’ve put them through.

I normally get 10/12k miles out of a pair of Phil woods bearings. 2 years ago I switched to goldtecs on my winter bike and there still going after 15k miles. I’ve warn out a front rim before the bearings.

I'll probably send them an email, as they've been solid. It makes me want to get a set of their carbon wheels for my new Race ready road (r³).

That's interesting to know as i would of thought the more expensive hubs would of lasted longer

Yes so close now, I'm bricking it about commuting in the cold now as I don't want to risk falling. My skin is still healing from the ice last week...

I've got 338km left now so it's so close, my plan is to do more like 50/60km in total on Saturday so I'm going to try and stay 50km ahead.

This created a funny conversation at work about how people actual corner on their bike. We then saw someone steer around a corner on a motorbike, it didn't look right

When there's ice around I normally lean, then go "oh shit" and totally readjust mid-corner. Maybe grab a handful of brake just to seal the deal. Surefire way of hitting the deck. Ice is for drinks, not roads.

We also don't have winter like others so ice is more sporadic. I was talking to someone who rides alot in Oslo, he has 140 studs in his 30mm tyres for winter but when it's very bad he rides 38mm tyres with 240 studs

Yeah, it only takes one cold corner. I've been in a bunch that's hit totally invisible black ice on a sunny corner and done collarbones. It must've been minutes away from being water rather than ice. Even standing on it to pick people and bikes up was difficult and yet it looked like normal road. I've gone back to riding 25mm tyres though for this year's production of Hippy on Ice.

I do use ice spiked tyres on my commuter after a fall 2 weeks ago. I told myself what the hell I bought these for?!?! (Although I bought them when I was in Germany)

Yes, there's an odd thing called 'countersteer' where in order to steer, say left, you need to turn slightly to the right first which causes the centre-of-mass to move to the left and prompt the lean into the turn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countersteering

In motorbikes there's also the effect of the inside of the tyres having a smaller circumference than the middle of the tyres. This effect is less pronounced in bicycle tyres though.

where I can assure you I was turning left but the front wheel looks to be pointing slightly to the right (towards the camera).

I'm rolling into a brewery where a lot of friends and family will be. I can't wait for the celebration.

I've got 135km left now, I'll do 85km tomorrow and then finish on Saturday doing a nice easy ride. It's hard to not complete it tomorrow too be honest, i could even go out now.... But it will be great to roll in to the finish with others.

My knees wouldn't take a fixie now, they need some rest as I've been in pain for a couple of weeks
