  • I don't think MPs should be able to defect without it triggering an automatic byelection (even if it does make things awkward for Boris).

    To be fair to UKIP (and this is all I'll say in their credit), when Douglas Carswell and Mark Reckless defected from the Tories, they also resigned to force byelections. By winning them both, they made a bigger point than a simple defection would have done, which was probably the point, but they at least realised they should give the voters a choice.
